Agreed. Wanyonyi might not have a kick like that in a 3:30 type race but they basically handed this race to him on a silver platter by going through the 800 in 2:00.
exactly
that is why hocker at least bumped it up to 60 seconds / lap
not enough.
Wany closed in 800 pace.
as you said, 152 will put Wany in O2 debt, where it is the game of 1500 specialists.
Jakob needs to show up at one of these and rally the 1500 boys to bust it open and just make it really hurt to see what Wanyonyi can do. Pace the crew to a 3:29 and see how it goes. If Wanyonyi hangs in there, well then, that’s your answer.
I don’t think we’ll see Wanyonyi in another Grand Slam. Assuming he has adidas’ road to records, Kip Keino, and Monaco/Paris/DL final on his docket. He will get paid in this DLs and Pre never has a M800, so no reason to return to the US.
Yeah, his coach told me this was the only Grand Slam they were planning on doing. Travel is not convenient from Kenya to be shuttling back and forth a bunch of times.
That said, I hope we see Wanyonyi in at least one more 1500 on the circuit this year, preferably with Ingebrigtsen involved, too. Could you imagine the Olympic 800, 1500, and 5000 champs all in the same race?
We could have had that today if Jakob wasn’t so scared.
Jakob is grinning ear to ear seeing Kerr go backwards in the homestretch at lightspeed, Hocker getting dropped in the last lap before rallying to a distant 3rd, and Nuguse grimacing for his life - all in a 3:35 race. Wanyonyi isn’t contesting the 1500 in Tokyo. Jakob may not have won this race had he been in it, but other than Wanyonyi he’s got to be feeling the best of anyone about the result.
Jakob I was sitting back laughing his ass off, as Centro so accurately said. What a joke this race was. What happened to Hocker the self-acclaimed "best racer in history".
hocker and goose kind of helped along the pace to 2 min half.
otherwise it was a danger of a 350 1500m.
where biG W might have run the first 49 second close.
hocker lost contact in the back straight, and that is a no no, per fact.
hocker would have bailed himself out, except that's not going to happen with a cross country 141 guy with a 10 m jump, with a full tank of gas.
these words are or will be repeated and mentioned in the upcoming runs...
such is the tiny nature of this sport.
maybe maximum fun one can have on a sport message board.
Wanyonyi could probably approach 3:30.7 this year.
Keep in mind, this is what everyone said about Brazier after his 3:35 upset win at the Big Friendly in 2020. Turned out he was just a 3:35 (maybe 3:32 tops?) guy who could close really, well (52.1) at that pace.
On a slightly related note, Gebrihwet (and Kejelcha) should be spending at least an hour a day studying film of past races so they can figure out how to not be absolutely terrible at tactics. Both of them should have way more medals than they do given their speed, but they just play things so badly in the races that matter.
One thing Jakob has no fear of is Africans. He's been racing them and beathing the best since he was 15. If he were in this race it would have been a 3:28. We saw what he did indoors with those two world records. He fears no one!

Us track nerds are obsessed with the men’s 1500 and GST and Wanyonyi gave us a gift today, but we always want more. Now we need to see Wanyonyi in a paced/wave light Jakob led DL 1500. Can Wanyonyi hold up or will he go out the back? He may not be able to win such a race this year, but I bet he’s competitive. It just looked too easy for him today to conclude otherwise.

Nah. I've no interest in seeing Wanyonyi in a Jakob led TT. I've been bored sh1tless by those for four years now. I want to see them in a championship style race - can Jakob's strength run the finish out of Wanyonyi? Or does Jakob end up fifth next time?

Jakob isn't scared, he just made the best business decision for him. People are ragging on the GST competitions for taking the money, but that's exactly what Jakob does. He's one of the few athletes that gets GST level money from DL meets. Plus, he gets to set the terms of all those meets so that the 1500 is always set up exactly as he wants it. It's part of what is so frustrating to others in the field. At GST, he would be treated just like everyone else rather than like the little prince of the track, and he's not used to that so he will stick with the DL.
