Shipping low salary jobs back to America won't increase productivity and consequently not increase purchasing power.
The GDP of America has increased tremendously the last decades, but benefited mainly a small group as the biggest increase has been in sectors with relatively few workers such as finance and technology.
You guys could of course have redistributed some of that wealth through taxation to provide things such as universal healthcare, cheap higher education and cheap day care for kids, but oh yeah I forgot, "communism"...
We're $36 trillion in debt and the leftists think there's still mountains of cash available to be stolen and flushed down the toilet by the government...
If they wish they can create $200 trillion more in about 5 seconds and a button push. Its all monopoly money, some get huge amounts essentially free, most have to slave away to get a tiny portion of it.
But you are right, better let all the money and hence power accumulate at a very few hands. After all, the oligarchs do seem to have the good of the people as their main concern.
In my view, there has been no "left" in American politics the last decades, at least not in term of economics, its just been different strategies of how to increase inequality in the population while letting people argue about weird issues such as if one must use wordings such as "latinx" or whether the word "climate" or "woman" can be written in a scientific application. But by all means, do continue these discussions while even more people go hungry to bed while the oligarchs add a couple of more zeros to their already fantasy number of a fortune!
I am a die-hard liberal. I donated a ton of money to Bernie Sanders because his biggest issue was increasing MINIMUM WAGE. Bernie HATES big corporations.
If you really think about it, the reason we rely so much on countries like China to produce items is that companies didn't want to pay a higher wage for Americans to produce those items. So they moved production overseas where labor costs are like 1/100th of the cost in the USA.
The whole minimum wage argument was that the corporations are ripping off Americans to increase their profit, and us liberals HATED corporations for that.Collectively we agreed that wages need to go up even if costs go up, even if corporate profits shrink.
To some degree you are right. But Americans love cheap sh!t, that's why Walmart forced all companies to move their production to Asia.
Nobody wants to pay $5000 for an I-phone or $10,000 for a laptop.
Trump has just dismantled the global economic order. Nobody wins and least of all the suckers who voted for him. The king of bankruptcies will do the same to the US economy.

This is the thing. Democrats have been playing cleanup rescue missions for the last 60 years.
We have a very clear cycle in this country of Republicans mess it up, Democrats save it.
The economic track record of America leans so heavily in favor of left policies it’s amazing any person ever votes for the right unless it’s for social issues like abortion.
10 of the last 11 recessions in this country were started under Republican presidencies.
Every Republican president in office since 1960 has had us in a recession.
Trump is running the country like we can go bankrupt and start over like his companies do.
Tariffs won’t last. Trump wants these countries to make a deal. As soon as they come to the table to deal, a more favorable arrangement will be made for both parties.
People don’t get it. Trump just wants to force better trade deals. They’re acting like these tariffs are permanent.
Read the fine print junior. There are almost no tariffs against American products. What Trump calls reciprocal tariffs are just trade deficits, there is very little foreign countries can do about that .

This.
The US has the highest negative balance of trade with China followed by Vietnam, Japan, Germany, Canada and Mexico. Better trade deals will be negotiated with all these countries within the next few months.
Mexico, Canada, and Vietnam have already made concessions and want to negotiate. Germany is trying to get an EU response, but Germany will be forced to negotiate to protect its auto manufacturers. Japan wants to negotiate directly with Trump.
China is a wild card because it has a near monopoly on production of some US imports. OTOH, China must maintain a steady growth in its exports to grow its economy.
Also, keep in mind that tariffs are imposed to get concessions in other areas, not just tariffs. Canada and Mexico have made concessions to secure the border. I suspect that some behind-the-scenes negotiations about Cartels and drugs from Mexico are also being discussed. Don't be surprised if Mexico authorizes US drone strikes in Mexico against cartel leaders in the near future.
Assume that you run a company now and would like to keep it profitable. Would you invest a ton of money and time in developing new U.S.-based production that might not be fully operational the fore the tariff guy changes his mind or leaves office? Or would you wait him out?
I think you also neglect how much corporations and trade partners prefer consistency and a measure of predictability and reliability over mercurial self-absorption.
Since when did democrats care more about corporate profits instead of American's rights?
"Workers in this country should not be asked to compete against desperate people around the world who work for pennies an hour. That is wrong."
"We have got to move away from unfettered free trade, telling American workers in this country they've got to compete against people who make 30, 50 cents an hour, to FAIR TRADE in which the middle class and working families of this country get a fair shake"
Regarding Bernie Sanders, his explicit jobs platform was as follows:
--- Enact a federal jobs guarantee, to ensure that everyone is guaranteed a stable job that pays a living wage.
--- Create 20 million jobs as part of the Green New Deal, rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure and creating a 100% sustainable energy system.
--- Create millions of healthcare jobs to support our seniors and people with disabilities in their homes and communities.
--- Create new jobs in early childhood education.
That is, he wants a minimum wage and expansion of job sectors that can not be outsourced.
He has also said that he supports the use of targeted tariffs as a tool in trade policy, but emphasizes that they should be applied rationally and as part of a broader strategy to protect American workers, rather than through haphazard measures. He has criticized President Trump's approach to tariffs, arguing that it can harm the economy and lead to increased costs for consumers.
One may reasonably agree or disagree with his policy prescriptions, but to conflate his position with Trump's approach is complete nonsense.
When we are in the White House, we will enact a federal jobs guarantee, to ensure that everyone is guaranteed a stable job. There is more than enough work to be done in this country. Let's do it.

Even if one is inclined to put a positive spin on Trump's motives, it's kind of hard to rationalize taxing islands inhabited by penguins as the work of some master strategist.

Who cares about a trade deficit? America is relatively rich and buys a lot of goods from other countries.

I agree with Bernie but I think he underestimates exactly how hard those things will be. We need a tremendous amount of money, and time, to implement those ideas. His plan calls for massive tax increases on corporations to pay for these things and I agree 100% with those tax increases.
WASHINGTON, April 10 – As millions of Americans prepare to file their taxes ahead of the federal deadline on April 15, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today introduced legislation to ensure that large corporations are finally req...
The American people want corporations to invest in their workers, not just dividends, stock buybacks and outrageous compensation packages to their executives.
But there is a deep hypocrisy because those tax increases would ABSOLUTELY increase costs of goods and services MUCH MORE than Trump's tariffs. Again, I support that. But why do my fellow liberals cheer when Bernie wants to increase costs but cry and act like the world is ending when Trump increases costs?
Tariffs 100% hurt big corporations. That's why the stock market is down.
If tariffs didn't hurt corporations then the stock market would not be affected.
It's a little bit more complicated than that. Stocks in consumer discretionary are also down because the average person isn't going to have any money to buy their products any more. Sure, that's bad for corporations, but it's also pretty bad for you for different reasons.
The markets will boom (but not right away) in the way the president said but most will not benefit because the poor and middle class will have nothing to invest with when the pivot happens.
In the way that you all need a car and will be forced eventually to buy one with an extra 7500 tacked on to it. You are all going to buy a new phone eventually with another 700 tacked on. Big corporations will be fine. Markets caving is a short term reaction.
The biggest untold reality. Domestic products will all go up to match the good that are tariffed. What does that mean? It means that big domestic corporations are going to make hugs profits off if this. With deregulation and a skeleton government there will be no checks on this. Do you guys realize that Trump doesn't go in grocery stores to buy anything nor did he have to growing up?
We are going to hope that they share the wealth but we know that narrative. If you complain enough he might throw you a bone so you vote properly again. I wonder what it feels like to be owned by your leaders. I am skeptical of anyone in power. Learn to use your own brains. Trump supporters are being forced to the lower class and are cheering for it as they go. Because, it's not fair what Europe is doing to us!
Basically, the president took advantage of the uneducated and duped them into thinking he was one of them. Not as dumb as he looks.

My point is that the Trump tariffs with Bernie Sanders' proposed jobs policy are quite different in implementation and in the probable effect of those policies across the citizenry.
It's pointless debating anyone who is unwilling to acknowledge the differences.

Because it's who the taxes fall on. Taxing consumption inevitably means people with little money who spend everything they have, will pay higher taxes than those who can live off a small percentage of their earnings and invest or save the remainder.
Taxing profit, income and wealth is a much better strategy than taxing people who purchase things that originate abroad.

I'm sorry but you are wrong on this. Check out my post, #39 above. The unsecured border and fentanyl were just a charade to allow Trump to override USMCA. You do realise that less then 2% of the fentanyl in the US came from Canada? Also, fentanyl seizures at the Canada US border are 0.1% of that seized at the Mexico border?
Yes, when Trump started this ranting about Canada we did try to appease him by increasing border patrols and assigning Black Hawk helicopters to the border. Alberta even proposed setting up its own boarder patrol group. The hope was Trump would move on to other things (Ukraine, Gaza) and this would all blow over.
Unfortunately it hasn't. Trump is still hell bent on imposing tariffs on Canada. Meanwhile, in Canada there is no more talk about increasing border security or setting up provincial patrol groups. Why? Because it is a waste of time and money. It will have no effect on Trump.
Trump is not a genius playing four dimensional chess. He does not have a master plan and neither do his acolytes. All you get from them are mixed messages. "Trump's tariffs are permanent and will force companies to relocate to America." "Trump's tariffs are a temporary negotiating tactic aimed at getting concessions." These statements contradict each other.

well, congrats, you got it all wrong. what you think is going to happen is not going to happen. only thing certain here is the average american is going to have less money and less jobs because of this.
