Yes honestly insane how strong the correlation of "amount of fox news watched" and "strength of reaction to being told you lived in chicago" is.

Born in Chicago with family four generations back. I have worked in a not so tough neighborhood on the North Side, and a very tough neighborhood on the West Side.

This is unpleasant to say, but put higher odds on the guy if he looks white. The drug dealers first instinct is treat whites in those neighborhoods as potential buyers. If he cannot pass as white, then his exposure factor goes up. Probably still ok if he runs in dayllight. Don't be fooled - Chicago the most segregated large city in the country and race matters.

I remember running for the UCTC when Ted Haydon was still with us in the 80's. No running south or west of the campus. Maybe overly conservative, but the school and the club were playing it safe.

Chicago itself not a great place to run. I got bored quickly running on the lake. The best places for me were in northern Lake and McHenry counties, along with Wisconsin . But to each his own.

I would suggest avoiding young black males, especially when they are in groups.

This. My most common heckling is from teenagers or dudes in Trump Trucks ("Run Forrest Run" or random vulgarities), and the heckler is almost invariably white. Been happening for 40 years.

Yep. I lived in Austin back in the 90s and my girlfriend lived way out in the boonies. Great place to run except every property you ran by always had an unleashed dog that would come charging out barking and snarling until you left his 'territory'. Then the next property's dog would take over the duties. I never got bit and they would never chase you when off their territory. They'd just turn around and go back, having done their duty. But it was terrifying to run there. F running in rural places. I'll take the city or suburbs any day.

There are only around 600 murders a year in Chicago. That's less than 2 people per day. It's very unlucky that this Brazilian grad student would be one of those two people.

Depends on what time of day. Safest time is around 8AM

I've put in a ton of MKE miles and have admittedly made some left turns I shouldnt have. That being said, I was never once harassed or even looked twice at.

Being a male makes this more feasible. Advisable, no. Life threatening? Probably not

yes but he can run 50 meters on some streets and if he find himself in the south side of Chicago, i suggest he run as little as possible and run at 6 am. Bad guys usually stay up late but sleep in and they may not be around at 6 am LMAO!

There is a lot of fear-mongering about Chicago, but don't always believe what you see on the internet, Chicago's southside and westside has the absolute nicest people you will ever meet! Will strike up a conversation with you like there's no tomorrow. I originally started running only in winter in more dangerous areas, but I have learnt that I feel better running more dangerous areas anytime and I prefer these runs because people are actually friendlier! Also, yes, I thinking running the same area running is boring, that is why I am doing different runs each day hahaha Let me know if you have any more questions!

Yes, I use citystrides! Also, I used to do dangerous areas in the winter but now I don't really care when I do them because I understand the reality. No one is going to mess with you if you don't mess with them. That said, I say hi to everyone on my runs and people are friendlier in more dangerous areas, in nicer areas people are always in a rush and rarely smile.

Why do people have to make everything political, I am here on a student visa anyway haha

I'm a former Chicago resident who loves to hate on the city as much as the next person, and even has my own colorful "stories" ... but he'll be fine. Helps to be male and generally if you're not the target, criminals won't bother you.
