agreed. general admissions deadlines start hitting in december. some teams are fairly committed in the spring. they are not waiting around for your last gasp effort (which they didn't sanction) to make yourself relevant to them as a recruit. i think it appeals to the dreamer but if you think about it from the coach's end keeping recruiting open until the end of outdoor to see if a potential worst walkon can cut it, is a good way to have a bad team.
