Yeah I remember those days. Seb Coe would break a world record and I would find out about it two months later - no joke.
I was a subscriber (in another country of course), back in the late 70's and early 80's...you knew about world records from mainstream news, but had to wait for T&FN about tyhree weeks later for detail and that of other races
In the US you might hear about world records in the mainstream news or you may not depending I suppose on how much interest the people who wrote the mainstream news stories thought there would be in a particular record. A mile record probably would get coverage. A hammer record probably not. Sports Illustrated paid a lot more attention to track than it does now so you'd at least learn about a record in a reasonably popular event the week after it happened. I do think this one would get plenty of coverage.
On sort of a similar topic, does anyone know where you can find complete results for this race?
if Armstrong livs comes on here, can we all please downvote every post he makes. Having said that i get the impression he feeds off the negativity like Colin from what we do in the shadows.
Sorry to keep you guys waiting because you've been expecting me. I wasn't disappointed in the race at all. It pretty much confirms everything I know about the sport now. I do think however he did underperform; he should have run closer to 3:50 - like the next prodigy will. A 14 year-old will take his record.

Damn it I was so excited. Of course you were the poster before me. What do you know about the sport? What has your extensive experience, your Snell interview and the decades of personal learning taught you about the great sport of Athletics?
Good old NZ - it's a great thing the race was broadcast but man, we have to work on the presentation here - onscreen timing was completely useless and the commentary was well, let's just say nobody is putting Steve Cram or Tim Hutchings out of a job anytime soon.
This isn't wrong but also not totally warranted either - Hayden is usually pretty well informed, and presumably does all his comms work for free. Hard to blame them for being on the back foot for a 15 minute meet on a Wednesday evening
Totally agree. Actually a bit of a dick comment by SS. They both game up their time for free and Holly Manning is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Hamish’s comment about how he was learning how to chat to girls at 15 and not run sub 4 was hilarious.
At 15 years, 11 months and 7 days old he would be the youngest human in history (unofficial but as official as possible I guess) to record a sub 4 mile.
Ethan Smolej the NZ 800m champion is pacing with targets of 58 through 409, 1.59 at 809 and Sam Tanner will then take it on to 2.58 with a lap to go. Weather for Auckland tonight is for 60 (15 degrees C) wind around 10mph (16 km/h).
Mt Smart held the Commonwealth Games in 1990 but this isn't the main stadium as the track is now only in what was the warmup arena. Seen some great battles over 1500m including that Comm games final where Walker was famously tripped by Pat "Inspector Gadget" Scammell in what was his final international race ever in a race won by the Rotherham Rocket Peter Elliot. Also a famous battle between kiwi thoroughbreds Phil Clode and Robbie "Kramer" Johnston at the 92 Smokefrees won by RJ.
Should be a good one. If they get the first lap right I predict 3.57.3 for Ruthe but honestly, I feel like this could be a conservative number...
Within 10 years a 13 year old will break a 4 minute mile. Where does this madness end. Prediction people. What will Sam Ruthe PR be in 10 years from now in 1500m/mile? I say 3:25.78/ 3:42.65

Fantastic running by Sam R and Ben Wall to both post their first sub 4s. I’m sure both of them will have many more to come. And amazing maturity from Sam R to handle the spotlight from all the media and the pressure of the occasion. Epic pacing from Tanner (who was encouraged to run to the end to share the finish line with the boys) and also from Ethan for the first two laps.
Salvitore, have you heard of the criticism sandwich?!? Sheesh
You’re obviously quite involved with the nz running community so do us all a favour and reach out directly to me or Athletics NZ if you’ve got constructive feedback. Comments like the above aren’t particularly helpful but I’m always open to hearing from the audience directly (find me on IG). Better yet, if you know of any sponsors keen to get behind the sport here, the livestream would be a great place to start and would mean we’d have the proper tools to deliver a more polished product on a regular basis.
FYI, this one was a fully barebones event, with one mic between two commentators, one camera, no monitors and no one getting paid (and we didn’t know about the onscreen clock—that must’ve made confusing viewing!).
Fire through your thoughts on how I might become more Steve Cram-like, I’d love some tips. He’s one of my heroes.

I wonder how the equivalents of you and Armstrong felt in 1964 when they saw a barely 17 year old American kid break sub 4 just 10 years after Bannister achieved the 'impossible' feat?
To put that into perspective, Sam Ruthe is still 15 seconds slower than the WR that was set over two decades ago.
It's taken 61 years to go from a 17 year old breaking sub 4 to a 15 year old breaking sub 4, so it's unlikely that a 13 year old will be doing it within the next ten years.
As far as predictions go, I think his PRs will be sub 3:25 and sub 3:42. I doubt if he will be the first to break those barriers though.

Good on you Hayden you and Holly actually did a great job. Real shame about the clock which did throw a lot of people off but that’s life. If Salvatore is any kind of man he will actually apologise to yourself and Holly.

It's now a doped sport - like cycling, weightlifting and bodybuilding. WADA lumps them together for risk of doping.

"Any wr that has lasted over two decades will be doped"
Except if Ryun's records survived until today, because they would be different right?
Pure as the driven snow.
That whole notion is cognitive dissonance. So i) WRs aren't allowed to survive for long periods because that is prima facie doping.
But also ii) gradual progression of records is also prima facie doping because nothing has changed in the 60 years since Ryun.
Get your lines straight mate.
Except that Ryun's records didn't last for over two decades. The only ones that have are those set in the late '90's (when there was no effective test for EPO) and the women's 100m-800m records set in the '80's.
Doping has been an increasingly dominant feature in the sport since the '70's and '80's. The practice has existed alongside the breaking of records. It hasn't abated, because it is the ticket to the top more than ever.

So you think a 15 year old is doped. Extraordinary accusations require extraordinary proof.

Not necissarily. He might go on to have a great career,or he might peter out and be out of the sport in his early 20s.
