For a guy who supposedly isn't very good at championship races, Jakob sure does win a lot of championships.
Straw man argument. Jakob’s abilities in unpaced races have never been questioned at a) European Championships vs. lower competition b) at the 3,000 and up. There is nuance to Jakob criticism
The legitimate concern is at the 1500m level where he’s gone 4th, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 4th in his last 6 global champs. That is the best of anyone overall. But maybe Kerr (5th, 1st, 2nd) beats him over the last 3. Still he’s been the clear 1 seed in each of the last 4, so a 0% winning rate is well below his circuit winning % of 90+.
"Lower competition". I find it strange how the level at europeans is constantly brushed off like its all C-tier.
I was writing about the 3000m only. But I don´t think Laros can challenge Jakob in the 1500m yet either.
By the way: I don´t think Hocker has improved SOMEWHAT. I think Cole is significantly up from the indoor season last year. If he can keep the shape outdoors or improve on it he might be the main favorite for gold in the Tokyo 1500m.
For sure I think Hocker is well ahead of last years indoors but what could he have run around Paris in a 3,000. 7:25? Certainly fast, so it’s just how he relates to that level. He’s ahead of last year indoors no doubt as are Kessler/Laros too. Jakob is too.
Obviously, haven't you heard that Josh Kerr with his 3 (three) gold medals in his career is a better championship racer than Jakob with his 30+ gold medals?
Wait, we're counting junior champs? Lol
Not really, I'm just too lazy to filter them out from Jakobs medal count, considering there's so many more gold medals to go through compared to Kerr. Out of Kerrs three gold medals, one is European juniors and one is Worlds indoor.

It’s not being a jerk to acknowledge that the only 2 guys to make a final at 1500/5000 last year were Laros and Gourley. So I’m not sure what you want us to say.

It's hard to win championships, and this race was pretty loaded. Coscoran beat Kessler in a 3000 handily earlier this year, and Kessler won US indoors. Coscoran got 6th today. A number of people on these threads thought Laros would take down Jakob. He was nowhere to be found. Jakob is often accused of being a time trial specialist on these boards and by competitors. But he shows up in these races over and over again and absolutely dominates. Look at Georgia Bell. Just because you're the favorite and the best runner doesn't mean it's easy to win these races. Yes, Jakob is vulnerable in world championship 1500s. Beating everyone in the world every time is nearly impossible. But he is still an absolute monster in championship races.

Wrong. Mills was in the 5000 final last year. And Coscoran and Habz have been in plenty of world finals.
The straw man is that anyone says Jakob is a poor championship racer at 3,000m+ or vs. fringe global finalists at 1500m. His tactics and abilities are proven at those distances or level of competition.
In a different dimension, winning either a gold or a silver in the olympics and the following two world championships is considered really good. There is a reason there is only one other active runner that is close to the same.

Did people actually think laros had a shot at beating Jakob? That’s laughable
Not what I’m saying. He is the best 1500m runner in the world but at unpaced, stacked 1500m finals, the field has the advantage of him. In paced 1500m races or vs anyone but the top 3/4 in the world he’s unbeatable.
And someone like Almgren would've certainly made the 5000 final at Paris but was DNS because of injury.
Well his heat had about 12 guys get in BUT in normal circumstances, it’s likely Krop, Kurgat, Lobalu, Ahmed and Gebrhiwet snagging 5. After that, him, Mills, Blanks, Hay, Gressier, Nordas, Heymans and only 3 spots left. Making a 5,000 final is no obvious thing.

Not to mention Almgren just ran a new ER over 10k (26’54).

There are only 12 people in a 1500m final. There are more than 12 people that is worth to consider as top level.
But if you must, in the olympic 1500m final last year 7/12 were europeans, four was present in in this 3000m field. At most North America can have three 1500 finalists at their continental champs, while Africa can only have 2. I understand that its just some misconception, but it is worth to look at the stats before saying so much (or just look at the names of those running, Almgren, Laros, Habz, Mills, J.I f.ex, all obvious quality runners).

Yeah, making a 5,000 final is no obvious thing, so we should not disregard runners that haven't made one.

I agree but I don’t think that against the other top Europeans (mainly just Kerr) would have changed the results in this championship. Kerr isn’t in great shape right now and even if he was in his shape last winter, he wouldn’t have been able to catch Jakob. It’s when the field is at their best and peaked in the summer that we see Jakob vulnerable.
