Does anyone know if Brazier has officially retired? Posted on IG today for the first time since 2022 that he’s engaged. He’s only 27 but hasn’t raced since 2022 either. Brazier retiring without announcing anything would be par for the course for this sport.
Also, did Clayton Murphy retire?
The guy who ran 1:45.01 in July? Probably not, I think the guys a few years younger than him are just insanely talented so now he’s relegated to just outside the Olympics.
I went to school with a very bright kid who ran 2:02 his senior year... he was the fastest on our school's team during the 3 years he was there (after my graduation) by at least 5 seconds, but he hurt his IT band and got depressed with sports and just quit...
Not as bad as blazing Brazier and his mythological burnout, though
I got a million downvotes because I (stupidly) wrote:
"That said, his body-type is pretty lean, I wonder if he ever thought about running the 5000m? Though it seems like more running would be hard for someone who can't stay healthy…"
I was not implying he should move up but I didn't make that clear; it is my fault of course for not writing more clearly.
I don't think that he would be a good fit in the 5000m because you have to run even more (and he can’t stay healthy as it is).
What I was wondering (not suggesting) was if he ever thought of moving up?
I mean, do you think as an athlete that it is easy to just give up and waste all that talent? I wonder if he ever thought of moving up or trying something different?
What was going through his mind as it dawned on him that he’ll never really be able to run the 800m again?
I think I would have tried anything (like switching events). What must it be like to have that much talent and not be able to do anything with it.
What's not getting understood here, is the very component that makes Brazier so fast at 400m/800m - s high-proportion of fast-twitch muscle fibre - militates against a top level 5000m.
The better a runner is at a specific distance, the more likely it is that his physiology is highly specialized to suit that distance.
What you don't get is the ability to run a 46.xx 400m AND a 13:00 5000m.

Seb Coe may have been able to get close. 13:20 maybe. And how about Hobbs Kessler?

Steve Ovett in 1978 ran a 47.4 relay leg just after running a 22.9 200m, just after running a 4:08 1500m, just after running an 11.5 100m - all on the same afternoon. He broke the two mile world record and made Henry Rono look like a fool just 4 weeks later.
Does anyone know of other pros who have seemingly retired without an official announcement? Off the top of my head I can name: Shannon Rowbury, Jordan Hasay, Kim Conley, Abbey D’Agostino/Cooper
It’s honestly sad how that all went down. So unbelievably talented and then just… nothing. Never even ran at an Olympics. Often wonder what happened to his career and he doesn’t post on social media so hard to know for certain.

If you never made an Olympic team, are you really good enough to even retire?
Rumor is they are going to let him throw out the first pitch and get a small clap from the crowd at USAs this year.
Jk.
Talent doesn't go away baby. It does get old and it does get injured but Brazier isn't old or injured!!
Now that his AR, collegiate record, etc are gone, it's almost like he was never even there, except for his WC gold of course.
What a shame.
This was my post 5 months ago. It is freaking amazing how Brazier came back from total oblivion to become a contender for the US team this year. Hoping to see him PR and make the team.

It’s actually suspicious in many ways. And very few have the nerve to mention this reality. If Clayton Murphy had done something like this the doping accusations would have been endless.

I am just so shocked that he mentally made it through that injury cycle. I remember this thread coming up 4 months ago and thinking, "Give me a break. The guy got extremely injured and it's just been too long to make it back. He was brilliant while it all lasted." So happy to have been so wrong.

You are misinformed.
Clayton Murphy retired in May. It was reported on LR, and literally on NBC.
