Yeah, sure. Bonus - I do a lot for charity, mostly sick children and the military but I don't discriminate. A few weeks ago we went out to a veteran's house and rebuilt his wheelchair ramp. We gave him $5K too. America!

Not to put too fine a point on it, but your "welfare budget" figure is fantastical. Even if you combine food stamps, SSI, section 8 housing, unemployment, and WIC you get about $400 billion, and most of those people are working. Temporary Assistance to Needy Families ("welfare") amounts to another $35 billion or so, but about 3/4 of that is administrative expense to make sure that the beneficiaries are meeting work requirements.

Based on some of the horror stories I've heard about VA hospitals and medical care, I'd like DOGE to conduct an audit and see where this money is going.

I'm not really sure what you are talking about. My husband served 22 years in the army, and 20 years has always been the normal service time for retirement. You would get 50% of your high 3 base pay (last 3 years was averaged). If you served over 20 years, you would get 2.5% more for each year, so my husband gets 55% of his base pay. Most would get out as close to 20 as possible because the thought was that they were working for half pay (however that's not counting BAH which you lose once you retire).
However let's be honest, the military people that are retiring now went through MANY deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. A lot of them are very messed up with PTSD with what they saw. Hindsight is 20/20 and I think many of us question why we ever went in to Iraq. But for some to comment how bad the Afghanistan withdrawal went and somehow that is soldiers fault is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. The soldiers follow orders, they don't get to make the plan. And some made the ultimate sacrifice by just following orders.

I’m not convinced veterans should be pensions. We’ve moved away from that as a society. Individual responsibility matters. Pay them more but ditch the entitlements.
