With 45.4 speed the dude should be easily running at least 1:42 in no time. And the best part, he'll actually be doing it clean

45.42 is impressive but also what you would expect from this guy.
He's been a killer since HS and has shown tremendous ability at 600m.
Easy guy to root for.
He’s been doing semen retention for some time. great to see it pay off
He doesn't even has the USATF qualifier for the 800. Let's no sugarcoat it, his 400m has been great but his 800m times are lacklustre.

Maybe, but the fact that he's close to the 400m qualifying time while not even specializing in the event is damning. I think for now he's just having a bit of fun running 200s and 400s for the time being
He said in an interview after his 1:48.21 at Atlanta that he was mostly just coasting and trying to get back into the curriculum of racing. He didn't seem bothered or upset about the time at all
a seldom run 45.2 indicates at lease 44 mid ability.
and 44 mid is all the speed you'll be needing for 800
the blocks, that is a specialist, practice thing the first 30 meters, which is a skill
you can have a 11.0 middle distance guy get down to 10.7 every day of the week with specialized out of the blocks training and running those firs 30 meters with the correct posture change to upright.
anyway this guy might want to go for the 600m world record as a specialization, and from there, figure out how to extend to 800?
the 600 is hybrid, and more of an aerobic sprint than 800, though the guys that run it are 800 guys, and 400 guys that are good at the 100, stay away from this distance like the plague.
The goat does it again with a 45.06. Lowkey insane. When was the last time we saw a 1:44 man run almost sub 45?
Im starting to think Sumner is no longer an 800m runner lmao.

I mean he did run 1:48.2 for a SB. Nothing crazy special but it's something. He has been a little lackluster this season in the event, but perhaps he's gearing up for something special in the future

Emmanuel Korir ran 44.2 in June 2018 and 1:42.05 one month later

Nah, I think it's just a multi-year plan. My guess is he spends the rest of the season focusing on the 400, primarily focuses on the 400 next year alongside getting back into the longer stuff, and then goes back into the 800 in 2027 to prepare for 2028.
I'm still really sad it didn't work out with Rinaldi.
Oh well.
