Ok, so now he is gonna run faster than Kessler did last year, who was on way to 3:29.x 5th in Olympics, and 1:43.64? Look at the list of College 3K guys, every guy on it is a better 5K runner proportionately than a miler.
We have differing opinions on this. Running off of 2:22, if they actually run that to 1000 , more like 2:23, when you have never run under 2:20 for 1000 or even 1:46.is not as easy as some on here seem to think. You don't see 3:50 as "out there" for him? It's Out there for anybody in the U.S. 4 guys ever have run under. That ain't many.
We just disagree, Strand is a"miler known for his kick?" By whom? he hasn't really ever beaten anyone of note with it. he was 9th in NCAA final, and 12th in Trials final, 4th Indoors NCAA. I cannot even find an 800M mark for him under 1:49 going two seasons back. I think monster 3K efforts indicate much better 5K talent than 1500, that's all.
We shall see...7;30 indicates 7:30 , and more 5K success than mile/1500 ..not one guy on U.S. or College list other than Nuguse is a World Class Miler/1500 guy. sub 3:50 would be that at this point. 10 guys all time, maybe 11 have ever broken 3:50.00
You must have missed me predicting Strand will run sub-3:30 this year, so yeah, maybe he will run faster than Kessler did
Why would 3:50 be out there for a 7:30 guy? That's like right in line with each other. Sure only 4 US guys have done it, but his 3k is top 4 all time US, and 2nd indoors behind only Yared Nuguse, who is definitely far better at the mile than the 5k, and ran 3:47 right after running 7:28.
I've always known Strand as a miler known for his kick. My HS coach told us during my junior year XC camp "Strand has a great kick, so you have to get out in front of him and run it out of him so he can't kick by you at the end" which is good advice generally, but Strand had just run like 4:08 as a sophomore, and I think the best guy on our team had a 4:30ish pb lol. I also knew him for winning the 800/1600/3200 triple at every indoor and outdoor state meet for 4 years (he might have only won 2 his freshman year idr). He was also the best guy in XC fwiw. I understand why you think he has more 5k potential, but his 1500 has always been WAY better than his 5k times, and generally better or equal to his 3k times. I just think that trend will keep going.
Yeah, sub-3:50 is certainly world class, but so is a 7:30 3k. And we've seen from Hocker, Garcia Romo, Nuguse, Adam Spencer, etc that if you're at the top of the NCAA, you're one of the best in the world. Wolfe beat Blanks at the OTs and Blanks was top 10 at the Olympics. Strand was basically as good as Wolfe in XC and in that 3k.
