I can't speak for the masses but I'd watch just about anything. If FloTrack did a series on Asbel Kiprop upon his return I'd certainly watch it. At this point it's either stop following the sport or accept the realities.
I finally had to take a step back not long ago when time and time again we've been burned by athletes, thinking most specifically about some of my favorite track and cycling athletes/teams. My wife told me that all professional sport is essentially the circus. Sport was meant to entertain.
If I went to the circus and they said, "hey the trapeze artists are on a microdose of HGH" I think I would care less. I would go, be entertained, and go on with my life. MMA, NFL, NBA, track, it's all become the same. Sadly the fluffy goodness we get when seeing a world record is kind of gone, but we can still allow ourselves to get excited by performances, the same way we would if we went and saw the circus.
