I think Brozzie is Tim Broe. He coaches high school but hasn’t really been successful. Not sure what the Young brothers have to to with Tim Broe
It's interesting to see the difference in body type between Nico and the twins. Nico is built like a rail, completely narrow through the hips. The twins are stockier and shorter. They have the engine but not the body. They've already achieved so much with just that, but to be the best of the best you need both.
It's so hard to bottle all the variables that produce elite runners. Some very good high school runners, like Nico, continue to develop at a nice rate. Some level off either due to injuries, lack of consistent training, and sometimes because they were already physically mature as high school seniors or because their high school training didn't leave much upside. And then there are those who were just decent in high school and went on to be studs. It's usually a combination of having been undertrained in high school and being physically immature relative to most other runners. That's why recruiting is an art. Any coach could just look at the performance lists and decide to take the top.runners. However, coaches who do their homework can spot the runners who have fluid form, have had low mileage and are late maturers. That's how we get runners like Graham Blanks (4:17/9:04 h.s.) with very good but not nationally ranked times. Yeah, 9:04 is very good, but when others are running in the 8:40s and 8:50s the 9:04 guy can get overlooked.

Simple, the twins, Lex and Leo left HS closer to their ceiling due to their training, they aren't going to improve much, it is not Stanfords fault, it is their fault. Train like a pro in HS and get fast if you have the ability but not going to go much further.
Cut them some slack. They have been in college 15 months plus it's an early indoor meet. Let's see what they run come may and june
Nico had a shortened senior track season but Lex and Leo were just as good if not better on the track. He ran 13:50, which was probably not representative of his ability, but also ran 7:56.97 in February or March with collegians. Lex ran 7:57 as a junior, nearly three years ago, and 13:34.96 as a senior, a year and a half ago. In high school, Leo ran 3:39.39 1500m to go with a 16th place finish at World Junior xc. That is a rare combination of middle distance ability and xc strength. So, while it's good that they're at their best level in college, they have really stagnated at Stanford; they are no better than in hs at present. But their hs career shows that they were as fast or faster than Nico in the same hs program with the same coaches, so you can't say that Nico was more talented. It's the program and the school opportunities at Stanford. Send them to NAU out of high school and they would be running much, much faster at this point.
Something to remember is that these guys are still only 19 years old. I distinctly remember the discourse a couple years ago about if Mike Smith was failing Nico and now we can look back and see his NCAA record(s?), him making the US Olympic team at 21 yo, etc. TLDR; development isn’t linear.

Kipyego placed really close to both of them at nationals and has much more linear progress while at iowa state. Same with Simeon, who has dealt with injuries and is still on the twins level/better. If you actually think the twins will be better than simeon you know nothing about running. Also Matsatsa ran 3:54 at boston which is so much better than the twins' 5k. He also went 1;45 as a true freshmen. That's almost world class.

It ain't the training. Those boys have their work cut out for them. Their high school glory is worn out, they need to step up big time to meet the expectations of collegiate running. The next year will dictate a lot.

While it is my personal opinion they are just busy trying to focus on academics as well, that is not the point. The point is that we have no right to call them rolled or tell them where to transfer or even bring up the idea that they should. Let them live their lives and if anything, we should be thanking them for giving college running a larger platform.

It really isn’t that deep, sometimes runners just plateau around 13:30 in the 5k. Not every runner is going to reach the level Nico/Parker/Graham got to.
Being a sub 13 guy is really difficult and most ‘top of their class’ high school runners won’t reach that level, even if their brother did. I just think that no matter how fast a runner is in high school we shouldn’t expect sub 3:35/7:40/13:10/27:30, because even the vast majority of high schools stars have a lower ceiling than those marks.
Agreed. Pretty much all the Stanford training is and has been on Strava. Charles and Ky weren't doing anything significantly different than the guys are now. The only noticeable difference this cross country season was that Ricardo replaced the epic 10-mile dead-flat tempo runs at Baylands with a version also at Baylands that incorporates some hills. And added hill repeats in a lot of those sessions. A few double-threshold days too if I remember correctly, but not that often. Nationals didn't pan out for whatever reason -- and that may be Ricardo's fault -- but the idea that Ky and Charles were doing their own training is ridiculous.
As for Sprout, he has been up and down for 5 years. Not sure what the issue is. Some of it has been injury, but he has been maddeningly inconsistent. But, big picture, I view him as one of those guys who came out of an elite, high-mileage HS program and that he was already closer to his ceiling than a lot of guys are. Maybe the same is true of Lex and Leo, though they are sophs so we'll see. Sure, Nico also came out of an elite program, but sometimes guys keep improving and sometimes they don't. Could be based entirely on talent, or training, or injuries, or any combo.

Cole came from a very low-mileage program at Valor Christian. Maxed out at 50 miles/week.
Yes, had essentially a 2-year stretch of injuries trying to keep up with Hicks & Robinson in practice. Ky stated as much in a recent Coffee Club podcast. Cole has been healthy for about 18 months now but, as you stated, wildly inconsistent as again evidenced by his recent poor showing in Madison followed by a really good 5000 effort this past weekend at BU.
Another point to make about athletes attending Stanford is they are randomly assigned roommates at freshman. So, getting enough good sleep is always a challenge for them when you have to arise for 6-7 am workouts. L&L went into detail in one of their VLogs on how they managed all that last school year.
However, as sophs on up, athletes can choose to live where they want and with whom they want.
L&L are living with soph teammate Milo Skapinsky in a duplex-like on-campus location. Other t&f athletes are in the building. So, sleep problems solved.
A huge ask for them would be to make the top-16 cut-off in either the 3k or 5k for NCAA Indoors. Currently, the #16 guy is at 13:29.90 -- although actually #15 now that Blanks has turned pro.
Whether they make it to Virginia Beach or not this indoor season, all signs are pointing upwards for the twins.

Leo spent a few days in the hospital Oct 2023 with appendicitis.
Lex broke his arm back in February.
Leo just set an a-t pr by 10 sec or so.
Lex set an indoor pr by about the same.
Their heat #5 was paced through 3k to hit 13:44. The pacer -- the guy from Adams State -- won the race. L&L showed they are at a fitness level that would have placed them in heat #3 or #4 where they likely would have run a bit faster.
Note: everyone from Stanford - men and women -- set prs save Sprout. And he came close.
(Bunnage set the new Australian short-track record with her 15-flat. Broke the old record by 15 seconds. Probably the Oceana indoor record as well. And the U20 record as she doesn't turn 20 until March.)
Have no idea why the men screwed up in WI a couple weeks back -- but the individual talent shown through today.
To be fair indoor track isn't a thing in Australia. Our outdoor season overlaps your indoor season. We don't even have a single competition ready indoor track! So the Aus indoor records are super soft relative to other countries. A woman running 16:00 for the 5k places them 10th all time. Now that short track is officially recognized as a seperate event for records, you now see some professionals coming over to the US to race, so this may change in the future.
