That is usually what I do when I feel deflated by the superior performance of another. I refuse to accept that people younger than me especially can have advantages from both biological and training age, so I usually go with the "must be doping" card devoid of any evidence, allowing me to dismiss the performance, the training, and anything that I might learn from these to improve my own training.
This thread wouldn't exist if her performance wasn't seen as completely out of the box for her.
Did you even watch the race? There really wasn't a kick. She just slowly ran away from everyone. It is not like she was racing the field at the Olympic 1500 final. This wasn't exactly a deep field. As far as Simpson... if you have been following along this long you know the shoes allowed on the road are way faster now.
Interesting. My thought was the fact that she won, easily, pointed to a very weak field, made of mostly of Americans.
Regardless of the rest of the field, she still set/equaled the course record. This was not some random 5k turkey trot. This is arguably one of the most world-renown mile road races, going back 43 years, run in the Big Apple metropolis. The mile distance is one of the more ‘prestigious’ running distances, carrying with it the ‘bring-back-the-mile’ notoriety. A lot of 5k guys wish they could run a better mile, an event in which they get exposed by the true milers.
Being a good collegiate miler - which isn't world class - didn't translate into her professional career. So what has she done since college over that distance? You do know she is 28?
She’s had multiple low key 1500 wins in 4:00, and was 4th in the 2022 U.S. 1500 final behind 3 women with 3:55-3:57 PBs and ahead of 5 women who have now gone sub-4.
^After a dawdling 1st lap, Schweizer ran the last 1100m at 3:54.55 pace.
Based on these facts, it’s likely she could run 3:57ish in the right race. Don’t ask “Why doesn’t she race the 1500 as her primary event then” because if you’re keeping up with the decade, you know 3:57 doesn’t earn you a spot on the U.S. team or guarantee you a spot in a global final. Besides, as Schweizer alluded to post-race, she’s better at those distances as time trials rather than tactical kicker’s races.
And you seem to think the mile exists in a vacuum completely independent of 3k/5k ability. What the hell is that. It’s completely unsurprising that a woman who’s run 8:25 and 14:26 and is consistently one of America’s best 5k runners is going to be capable of blitzing a good mile.
Speaking of the USA team, I watched the demeanor of Emily MacKay, both before and immediately after the race; she looked way confident before-hand, not like someone that just came to collect a paycheck. She walked up to the start line first to grab center line position. After the race, she rose from her hands-on-the-knees, turned around and looked back down the course, as if to ask, “what just happened”?
Which Nike flat was she wearing? Was that a new Vaporfly or some other road (plated) flat?
Maybe the new streakfly 2? I heard one of Jakob's brothers wore it in a 10k road race. Apparently it has a carbon plate so it's much better than the streakfly 1

It doesn't matter if it's the biggest, most important road mile in the world; it's still just a road mile. This is a payday and a chance for a fun weekend trip for most athletes. Most of the great athletes that have competed here are running on fumes by the time this race rolls around. It's the traditional last gasp of a miler's season.
KS had a great result, no doubt, but it doesn't mean she's a better miler than all of these women. She hardly ran this spring, so she was probably the only person on the line not desperate for a vacation.

Apparently a great day for her and a bad day for the rest of the field.
The hill hasn’t changed for all the world-class milers that have previously run this race. Were Muir’s road shoes last year as good as Schweizer’s shoes this year? I don’t want to discount the possibility that the shoes keep improving to boost performance.
I don't know about the shoes, but the surface was not. It was very wet last year and the year before, especially on any of those thick white painted lines. Kerr slipped at the starting line in 2022.

agreed. Mackay should have been the class of that field, but she was already overcooked for the season in Paris, it seemed.
The time was historically fast because of good conditions, tailwind, shoes -- and because it was a legitimately good performance for Karissa. But a true miler riding their season's peak would have probably run even faster.
For what it’s worth, Jenny Simpson never ran this race in super shoes hence her 4:16.
But Jenny Simpson was a world champion 1500m runner, two-time 1500m world championship silver medalist, and 1500m Olympic bronze medalist whose PRs in the 1500m and 3000m are 3 and 10 seconds faster than Schweizer's, respectively. Are super shoes closing those gaps?
You asked, and I quote, "So when did she start being good at the mile?"
Has all the drug use messed up your memory?

28? So she'd still be a junior at BYU?
Only a hobby-jogger thinks training works for only one specific distance.
And you do know she set the American 3000m record after college. Even a Florida math graduate could figure out that's more than 600m closer to a mile than it is to 5000m.
Josh Kerr also ran the course record today, and some want to put an * on it because of a tail-wind.
You need to put an * on it. There is a reason why they have wind gauges in one direction sprint races. They should also have them for one direction road races.
