So first of all, Rebecca is Ugandan.
Uganda is not Kenya. See: a map.
replying to everyone dismissing this as "third world" or "African" or "Ugandan". Doing so does two things. The first is it is obviously racist, "look at those barbarians over yonder bs but the second is it makes it perpetuates the idea that western men/abusers would *never do such a thing* and so western victims of DV aren't heard or believed.
People have brought this up, but yes, men in western countries have done horrific things to their partners. Unspeakable things. Chris Watts, Scott Peterson, Michael Haight, and Brian Laundrie are the sensational cases of American men who brutalized and murdered their partners/families, but it happens ALL the time. USA's access to firearms exacerbates the issue, and puts women in far more danger than they need to be. Many times, abusers work in law enforcement making coming forward or escaping even harder.
Should we ignore women's rights and the abuse of women elsewhere because we have those problems here? Absolutely not. We should speak up for them, and there is no question that despite our shortcomings in this country women have more rights and independence than in most of the world. But the way people on here are writing it off as a "third world" problem, as if this is something that's SUPPOSED to happen to women in Uganda is what disgusts me. It's not.
Which brings me to my third point-dismissing this as a third world problem, dismisses what happens to Rebecca as just a rite of passage of being a third world woman. What happened is despicable, and it can happen to ANYONE who finds themselves in the clutches of a partner who has chosen to abuse them. I really hope justice is served and Rebecca recovers, and gets the heck away from that disgusting monster.
