Honest question -- where is this coming from? She has 1.4 million IG followers, is a beloved Olympic champion, has huge endorsement deals, etc.
She's either 1) so consumed by social media that she's angry/so put off by seeing any negative comments that she can't rationalize all the support she does have or 2) this is an intentional marketing ploy to sell more books/make her more sympathetic & valuable.
I hate buzzwords. Just say how you feel. I don't think there is some mass movement to "cancel" her. I think some people just might not share her religious views. Most can separate that out & still be a fan so, again, I'm asking where is the cancelling? When you say that you make it sound like that's the overwhelming opinion. It's not.
Obv her book didn't sell as well as the bible, so shes P|SSED
No, don’t care and in fact, I’m an atheist but liked Marisa Howard’s message at the trials about how God would have been there for her even if she was last. (I paraphrase.)
Wild that specifically Americans are so into God/religion and also have the worst math/science/reading test scores in the western world. Remember, Sydney didn’t finish college. Not that she needed to, of course. You just never see a genius being so into God, do you?
"God does not play dice with the universe"
- Albert Einstein
In reference to his disdain towards the theory of quantum mechanics you fool
what exactly is the difference between religion and conspiracy theories? why is it okay for us to look down upon conspiracy theorists but need to stay quiet when someone is spouting about some man in the sky?
Some conspiracy theories have significantly shaped Western culture, for better or worse, more than their peers.
Did any of you actually watch the short video? Clearly some religious interviewer asked her a provocative/leading question about being "cancelled" for her beliefs, and Syd gave the most benign answer you could expect.
Name calling is a sign of someone without anything intelligent to say. Come back when you're interested in an actual discussion.
Why? You clearly ARE a bigot just own it. You are also completely ignorant of what goes on in schools. How should I engage with someone like you that thinks LGBTQ people and diversity is bad and that we don't teach academics?
Lots of misunderstanding about Christian beliefs being thrown around in here, particularly about what athletes mean when they thank God for their performance. The Christian does not believe that God is rewarding their faith with special little favors of performance.
"If there was any idea of a sort of bargain - any idea that we could perform our side of the contract and thus put God in our debt so that it was up to Him, in mere justice, to perform his side - that has to be wiped out.
I think every one who has some vague belief in God, until he becomes a Christian, has the idea of an exam, or of a bargain in his mind. The first result of real Christianity is to blow that idea to bits...Every faculty you have, your power of thinking or of moving your limbs from moment to moment, is given you by God. If you devoted every moment of your whole life exclusively to His service you could not give Him anything that was not in a sense His own already." - C.S. Lewis
Like many of you I was an atheist for many years. Another C.S. Lewis quote that comes to mind when thinking about where I was: "Christianity has nothing (as far as I know) to say to people who do not know they have anything to repent of and who do not feel that they need any forgiveness."
Terrible test scores indeed but you think religion is the problem and not LGBTQ, DEI and gender change issues forced on our youth while the time could be better spent actually teaching math/science/reading?
The issues listed are fairly new in the educational sphere, and yeah, accepting people for who they are - how awful. Poor education in the U.S. has been an issue for decades.
Read Anti-Intellectualism in American Life by Richard Hofstadter. Tough read but worth it.
Has always been so and will continue to be as long as right wing and other conservatives have their way. A good education has always been the downfall of fascists and conservatives. Hence the reason why they always go after the intellectuals, burn books and close down access to fact based information. Conservatives and fascists have always thrived on a poorly educated populace.
I’m a spiritual person, but not an organized religion person. She can believe what she wants because of it helps her that’s fantastic. She’s not trying to proselytize anyone. She’s just telling you what works for her. In this country you can worship any which way you want just stay out of government, and don’t expect the government to bow down to your beliefs because we have separation of church in this country. And if you can’t like that, then go back to the country where you came from or if your an American, legal immigrant? Shut up.
also, she's not saying she's being canceled, the term isn't used. she's basically saying she believes what she does, wants to be herself, that she thinks any response will even out in the wash ("god will provide"), and so what if she loses some business, and she hopes they find her truth eventually.
fwiw that last bit is where she's not being a victim. she's not beefing about her bottom line and she wishes those who disagree her well. i don't think you listened to what she said if you wandered down cancel culture road with this.
i'm not gonna hunt down source material on this but it sounded like more of an abstract "what if" discussion than a concrete one. i've barely heard discussion of her beliefs and not heard of anyone beefing at her or cutting ties, much less butker type culture war stuff.

Frauds like Claudine Gay and her ilk have rotted the institutions of higher learning and done far more damage than any of your imagined book burnings and "closing down access". What does having access to a cesspool of intellectual disease impact in terms of benefit?
Not even mentioning the modern day book burning of woke censorship of every platform.
I have long handicapped her properly, on and off the track.
Consequently I'm prepared for greatness during hurdles and quite the opposite whenever she says or writes something
I suspect that her religious fanaticism is in part related to her crippling anxiety before races. I have never seen an athlete so wound up as her in the call area before the 4x4. Her belief seems to offload some pressure of responsibility to an outside power, so allows her to deal and thus run better, or at all.
A side.note is that religiosity is always highest in women hurdlers of both types, who feel extreme pressure in a punishing event.
It isn't her particular religion she is referring to as "truth", it is her belief in God which is the purpose of all religions.
It is not about merely the religion, it is the individual telling about the religion and what they believe. Contrary to what is often written not all religions seek GxxD. Certainly not all men follow their faith the way they should, myself included. But if are you sincere, that does count for much! Repent and although I do this daily in a personal way, we must also do it in community. My lists of sins is long...
My father once proclaimed in the newspaper that all religions are good. I think that used to be true. Certain we have seen what the opposite brings when there is no order and no discipline.

How ridiculous. Sydney has never been "canceled". She's one of the most popular women's athletes at these games. I and many others can't stand her given her ultra-religious schtick and the fact that she's scared to actually race real competition, but she has never been "canceled". Total victim mentality.
I think social media makes a lot of people feel unecessarily but justifiably victimized. If you look at comments, message boards, etc you'll find the most deranged and misplaced vitriol regarding just about anything if you're looking for it. If you're a public figure and you get focused on detractors' commentary, it's way too easy to think that you're being persecuted.
Look for the Good, in everyone and every thing! Be a good finder!!!
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”” John 14:6-7 ESV
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”” Acts 4:12 ESV
“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,” 1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
Jesus claimed that He was the only way to heaven. He’s either lying, being a lunatic, or is truly Lord. I’ll let you be the judge of that. Repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ!
