This is true, but they could have hosted somewhere in Europe like ethiopia does and they would achieve the same thing without requiring their athletes to fly halfway across the world and a completely different time Zone
Like where? 10,000s are rarely run in meets nowadays. And it would have to be a 10,000 now before the qualifying window closes.
Oslo, May 30th. Stockholm, June 2nd. Long history of great 10k running there, and the weather is usually great. They could also have added it to the Paris Diamond League on June 7th. Not good weather, but the added advantage of it being in the same city as Olympics about 7 weeks before August 1st.
As far as qualifying, anyone who has a shot at their team has qualified in one of the ways.

Your post just proves people will see what they want to see.
Your post is just flat out fake news.
I gave a partial quote because I have limited space in the subject line. I don't have room to quote all 3 sentences so I quoted the first one and then linked to his tweet right below it. It's a shame twitter's API no longer puts the tweets on the messageboard but I pretty much did the opposite of what you said I did.
LOL Rojo, due to your website’s space constraints, you could have summarized Lyles full quote in the subject line.
If you had done that, you could legitimately claim you did pretty much the opposite of what McRunnin said you did.
Instead, you lifted the juiciest part of the quote and removed much of the context, pretty much what McRunnin said you did.
And when called on it, you blamed space constraints on your website and the Twitter API.
Dumb take by Lyles. If he did research, he’d know about the effects of altitude, as well as the complicated nature of 10K qualifying. Right now we are hosting our own 10K trials where because it’ll be run in the heat and with no pacers we might end out setting our B (Henes) or C type (Hurley) options. Or we might send only 2 athletes.
Kenyas notice was too short, but otherwise they will send a team in a meritocratic, thought-out way. And Ebenyo sorted it out, so out-of-date take too.
Lyles posted his tweet yesterday, May 22. The news that Ebenyo was able to get a visa didn’t come out until after Lyles’ tweet. It looks like the only out-of-date person is the letsrun OP, our “benevolent dictator.”
The quote in this thread’s title is a partial one that was taken out of context, undoubtedly for clicks and engagement. Lyles was responding to a tweet regarding Ebenyo’s inability to get a visa at that time. Lyles made a good point about the visa issues with World Championships when Eugene hosted in 2022, and he also added a thoughtful point about Kenyans not being able to watch their country’s Olympic qualifier in person.
Here is his full tweet:
“Why in the world are we hosting another countries Olympic qualifier. We should know how much of an issue this is after worlds 22. Also their country won’t be able so see their athletes make the team in person.”
This is it. Lyles’ tweet would’ve been better worded as “why in the world is Kenya hosting it here?” But the meaning behind it was clear to me.
If this is about Kenya, rather than Ethiopia, this time, the same applies. They could run, for instance, in Mombasa along the Indian Ocean.
"The lowest point in Kenya is on the Indian Ocean at 0° while the highest point is on Mt. Kenya which is 5,199 meters above Sea level. Kenya is located in the East African region of Africa."
There is no running track nor even an available stadium in Mombasa right now

I live in Kenya, just ran there in morning, heat and humidity like running the trials in Miami
Noah Lyes, of course, has the right to his opinion but I can't help but think that a part of the reason for his motivation to make a comment at all is so that he can simply draw attention to himself.
Aren't most of these runners based in Europe during the track season? It is only 10 hours (direct flight) from Frankfurt to Portland. I don't see the problem.
I think 10k qualifying is just messed up in general right now.
How about this for an idea, instead of having this incredibly difficult time standard to hit, each region holds a qualifying race, kinda like how NCAA regionals works to qualify for nationals in xc. You allocate a certain number of bids for each region that makes sense, but still provides for geographical diversity. Top finishers in each region make the WC or Olympic final. You hold the regionals in late winter or early spring, and get some insanely exciting races.
Let's say you're trying to fill a hypothetical field of 25 or so.
Africa - 8 spots
The Americas - 5 spots
Europe - 5 spots
Asia (& Oceania) - 3 spots
Last 4 spots are given in order to the non-qualifying athletes who ran the fastest times at the regional race. This way you hopefully avoid these championships turning into a jog fest for 5 miles.
Imagine instead of this weird Kenyan trials race in Oregon, it's all the best 10k runners in Africa on the start line, top 8 advance. This system seems a lot more fun than the current one. I would do this only for the 10k, and maybe the marathon too. I'm happy with how the current system works for shorter events.
Thank you Noah Lyles for saying it! Where are the distance races for men? How about a 5000m opportunity for American men to race on American soil? No Prefontaine distances at the Prefontaine meet for men? Not our responsibility to provide for Kenyan trials. Is it not enough for foreign athletes to be taking American scholarships at US colleges?
Secondly many countries go to other nations to hold trails because they have better facilities and technology.
This doesn't take away from track, it actually adds to it. What distance fan doesn't want to see a bunch of top Kenyans take on each other in a winner takes all 10k?
