What would Letsrun do without its threads hating women? I guess it would have to fall back on its racist threads, its threads hating science, such as climate, moon landings and Covid, hating history - especially in the ME and slavery in the US - and its threads hating other Americans, like "libs" and Dems.
hey dummy, you must be real sensitive if criticizing some lady who’s been dead for 90 years bothers you this much. Damn it must be hard to live like that.
If this does turn out to be the her Lockheed Electra, my guess is that it will have been found about 100 miles north of Howland Island. Has to be north because that where the cloud cover was that day and has to be about 100 miles or otherwise they would have seen Howland.

But it isn't "sensitive" to deride a woman who's been dead 90 years. So many threatened little guys here.

That's cute, coming from the man who constantly claims women are incapable of running times similar to those of his heroes from the past. You are as bad as those posters. It's just that your misogyny is directed at athletes.

To identify doping in the sport - and it is everywhere - has nothing to do with misogyny. Men dope, too.
They had sufficient gas to get from the takeoff point to Howland Island, their destination. However, Howland Island is just 1 1/4 miles long, and they never made visual contact with it. A navigation error got them slightly off (there was an error of the position of Howland Island on the chart they were using), and although radio signals indicated they were close, they probably ran out of fuel while still searching and crash landed in the sea.
How the hell do we know what charts she used if the plane’s at the bottom of the damn ocean
why would they not survive crash landing in the ocean? Didn't they bring any survival gear?

Have you ever been to a museum and seen what was cutting edge lifesaving equipment of that era?… And before we get there, managing to crash land a land plane on sea with big radials without flipping it, is already bloody difficult, then managing to extract the equipment out of the mangled sinking aircraft etc etc…
if you want, take a helicopter crash landing escape course, and then tell us about it.

Serious. People call her a trailblazer, but I don’t know. She also had a navigator (a dude) who crashed with her. I never heard of the poor b@stard until today. No one gives a damn about him.
You ever piloted an Aircraft over the ocean? I'd say no therefor you are not qualified to have an opinion on whether or not she should be considered a pioneer.

Mmmmh, let me think: This is 1937, there are not many ships in the Pacific ocean at that time, there is no satellite navigation or communication. Even if they survived the crash, which could be possible, nobody would found them.
I watch ocean sailing and it is even very difficult to get a sailor out of high seas if you know the position and have GPS.

Some people survive crash landings, some don't. If you survive a crash landing in an ocean there's still the matter of not drowning, of not getting eaten by sharks, of not dying of starvation or dehydration. If you do survive and manage to get to dry land those problems could go away if the island has some edible plants and a fresh water source but not all of them do. Actually, it seems very possible that they did survive the crash. There are reliable reports that a girl living in Key West who was a ham radio operator was picking up distress calls from them but nothing came of it. I read this a long time ago and can't remember why. Maybe I'll try to find the article again and link it here if I do. That's a big if right now.
I doubt they'd have brought much in the line of survival gear, maybe a couple life jackets, a medical kit, flashlights. If you're thinking of something like an inflatable life raft and oars it's unlikely. They'd add weight which would have increased fuel consumption which would have reduced their range significantly.
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) is the national association for amateur radio, connecting hams around the U.S. with news, information and resources.

Yes, basic things like inflatable rafts, emergency rations and first aid kits were a bit higher-tech than airplanes. It would be a few more decades before we had those.

There is just so much misinformation on here, it's painful how you people need to reach to push your agenda. Amelia Earhart was famous for being a female pilot - she was in no way considered anything other than female. Short hair on women in the the 1930's was common, it was not androgynous, it was sexy. Amelia was also married to a man. Again - at no time while she was alive was she ever portrayed as anything other than being very much female. Do you think when Audrey Hepburn got a bob haircut in the 50's it made her masculine? It's sad so many of you feel so threatened by a woman who's been dead for almost 100 years.
Aerospace engineer here. In case this is a serious question, here's a serious answer: most aeronautical pioneers died in plane crashes. You can read about many of them in this book and also learn the basics of the mathematics of flight:
I think about this a lot as someone who works in commercial space. Today we don't accept anywhere near the death rate that early plane flight experienced, but it's still a dangerous business.
