This game proved how the portal and opt-outs (FSU "missing" 21 players) will destroy bowl games and any post-season play for all but a dozen top D1 football programs. What fan wants to pay for travel and expensive seats to see their side play second stringers in a one-sided blowout?

But not even the top dozen teams are immune from this. See FSU, Ohio St., Penn St. I don't follow Oregon that closely, but how many of their top guys are transferring or opting out rather than sticking around for the honor of playing Liberty....
Next year, I wouldn’t even be all that surprised if we see some projected first-round picks on low-seeded teams sit out the CFP. Portal guys could still be another factor in those situations, depending on why they want to get out and where they intend to go.

Interesting questions:
1) If something doesn't change, do we see watered-down teams in the expanded playoffs?
2) If something doesn't change, do bowls involving teams outside the playoffs survive? I don't know what the pressures are on either side of the related equation. If non-playoff bowl games become a complete joke (which looks certain without changes), will that cause their death? I mean, for decades a lot of them have already been a pretty big joke (including empty stands), but they stayed alive. So, it's hard to know if turning them into 3rd team scrimmages would kill them?

It's also interesting as another example of, "You think it can't get worse?"
For decades, people have made fun of two .500 teams playing in a Toilet Bowl. And you think, "It can't get worse than that."
And now, you will have two .500 teams who don't look anything like the teams that played the whole season in a (Sub-) Toilet Bowl.
I think that many fans could still enjoy an old-fashioned Toilet Bowl, depending on the match up - e.g., Big 10 B/C Team v. SEC B/C Team, Lesser Team v. Down-Year Blue Blood, etc.
But to watch a game between teams who look nothing like the team that played all season? That's just stupid, and it will be interesting to see if market forces allow such events to continue?

Agree, and that's what's so frustrating this year. It feels worse than prior years. I want to see a full strength FSU vs. Georgia, Ohio St. vs. Missouri, and so forth. It's boring to watch these games, whether it's lopsided like GA/FSU or a snooze-fest like Ohio St/Missouri.

Quick question. Why are FSU fans in total denial? Even if everyone was there and they were 100 percent, the score would be 41 to 10. FSU doesn't belong. Stop with this madness of them hanging with Georgia in an exciting game. IT'S A TEAM SPORT and your team quit because they knew they couldn't win and wanted to use this as an excuse. Just like Micheal Johnson used to do with his fake injuries when he would pull up after losing in a race.

You’re getting a little carried away. This year, Georgia had 4 games where they won by 10 points or less and 3 of them were against unranked teams. Alabama isn’t a powerhouse this year and still beat Georgia. If FSU had their best players on the field, including their great quarterback, it would be competitive game. If Georgia was that much better than a full strength FSU, they would have blown out Alabama.
Who even cares about this? We argue but nobody knows because we cannot edit reality. So it is just pissing into the wind.
It is. But, the reality is it doesn’t matter that FSU’s players “opted out.” That’s totally lame, and that’s on them. They only had to play one more high-profile game instead of the two they would’ve had to in the playoffs. It was in their home state. They had every reason to want to prove they really did get snubbed without their starting QB by playing and beating another very good team that easily could’ve been a playoff team. They chose not too, which, frankly, is shameful and, frankly, shows they were afraid of the outcome. Just super lame. Wow, you really showed us and the committee. Now everyone REALLY thinks you got screwed, lol. What a bunch of pu$$ies.
They took the same situation that FSU was given and turned it into a record breaking statement game. The coaches and players kept the team together and let everyone know they were still (likely) the best team in the country.
It is a very interesting situation with FSU. They had every reason to be pissed after not being put in the playoffs. But at that point, they had a few options/possibilities:
1) Stay together and beat Georgia.
2) Stay together and at least give Georgia a very good game.
3) Quit and get completely embarrassed, lose a lot of sympathy about their playoff snub, lose a lot of the benefit-of-the-doubt about how good you really were, etc., etc.
The word "character" no doubt gets used too much in sports, but that the fact that FSU picked #3 MIGHT say something about the character of that team, in this case.

Exactly.
FSU AD deserves to get absolutely flooded with calls and emails. It’s shameful. Georgia played with hardly a reason to.

The players absolutely did the right thing by staying healthy for the NFL or their transfers. The only thing dumber than trying to "prove they really did get snubbed" would be to get injured in this farce.
Did you ever think that they could ruin their futures in a meaningless game trying to prove to internet nobodies (or worse, a broken system that completely screwed them over) that they "belonged"? After getting slapped in the face? The arrogance of some of you people to think that they owed you their effort after going undefeated in a Power 5 conference and being left out because Alabama was gifted a victory over Auburn. It's nuts.
They were undefeated, beat 2 SEC teams, and had one of the best defenses in the country. Not good enough for the playoffs? Fine. Move on. Obviously the players did.
