Living off the land? What? You didn't own land. That was for the wealthy. You worked a back breaking job, 7 days a week and barely broke even. You'd probably lose a limb in the process and then have your nose rot off from syphilis. All your teeth would have rotted out by the time you hit 30. Nothing's stopping you from "living off the land" now. I'd give you a week.
Alexis de Tocqueville wrote about 1830s America with much admiration. He wrote about our high literacy rates, economic opportunities for all, endless land, functioning democracy, etc. His masterpiece Democracy in America is worth a read.
But the following decade the Irish start flooding in. It has been all downhill from there.
Living life as a deaf person because there weren't drugs for my infant ear infections? No thanks.
Likely watching some of my children die before me? No thanks.
Exactly. Even the privileged rich ere losing their children. Go visit the Breakers Mansion In Newport, RI and on the tour you can learn about all of the children the Vanderbilt family (who were the richest family in the US 150 years ago) lost to various illnesses.
There were virtually no liberals back then. Like maybe 0.5% of the population.
On the contrary - most people back then wouldn't align with the crazy right wingers and would vote for a party more resembling the current democrats. Stop lying and read a history book.

So no, wouldn't go back to 1873. But 1823? Yes.
Think about what he was comparing the US to. We were the top of the sh@t pile, but it was still a pile.
Past periods always seem appealing because we forget all the bad stuff. Ask any of the nostogic 1950s people how much fun the iron lung ward was. I doubt any of us can understand what 1870s dentistry involved. Or the effects of lack of refrigeration on dietary choices.

Wrong. Most people aligned with conservativism. There were virtually no people who resembled modern day liberals. You should read some history before spouting off your nonsense.
Sad that the survivor bias written into the historical record has the violent narcissists that dominate these boards imagining they’d be at the top of the pyramid.
The greatest trick society plays on us is to have us imagining the billionaire is one of us.
Things were not better. And it's not even close. Material wealth of average person was far lower. Healthcare was non-existent. Lifespans were short. Disease was more prevalent. Inequality was far worse, and not just in SJW-walk, but in a way that is likely to negatively affect you, the average person--to say nothing of the horrors of racial violence that accompanied the post-antebellem era.
Newsflash, the current democrats ARE conservatives. Your culture wars stop you seeing that but you, Dems and our ancestors supporting violence and dispossession, including against themselves, are differently shaped peas in a pod.

Good chance my daughter who has been relatively healthy would be dead. She got a UTI last year and was in hospital for 3 days with high fever. Some high powered antibiotics made her better .
There is a reason most of us aren’t living off the land these days. It’s not a great existence.

There were virtually none of you people 150 years ago. FACT.
Your second sentence makes little sense. You need to re-word it.

Try actually reading Democracy In America.
In fact, over time, democratic equality has increased, as has material prosperity. Tocqueville himself notes that as this happens, visible discontent with the state of affairs increases -- a consequence of improved social conditions. Your endless posts of discontent reflect this phenomenon, but your reading of Tocqueville is to muddled for you to see that.
There were virtually no liberals back then. Like maybe 0.5% of the population.
Virtually everyone who came to the "New World" was a liberal, which means open to new ideas and experiences. They came for religious freedom and the ability to live without an oppressive government. The Founding Fathers of the U.S. were wild liberals of the time. They base our form of government on Greeks and Native Americans.
Dysentery, Cholera, Tuberculosis, Gangrene, etc were pretty common.
We have thinkers and their advancement of Science to thank for our very easy society today. A certain faction wants to wax poetic about the good old days but really has no understanding of how much better the world is now, nor who facilitated that.
This is a such a conservative, right wing fallacy... that things were better in the past. Make America great again? America was only greater 150, 100, 50, 30 years ago for white men.
Yes, but only if upper middle class +. i.e. live in cook and maid. E.G. Judy Garland's household in "Meet Me In St. Louis., or perhaps someplace like Grover's Corner in Thorton Wilder's "Our Town."

Lol. Nice try. It's on my bookshelf. I've read it many times. All should read it.
Sir John Glubb's "Fate of Empires" is an essay all should read as well. History shows that most empires last about 250 years. America just turned 247.

Look how twisted around you people get on just basic things. Seeking religious freedom is about the last thing a liberal would do. Liberals seek to destroy religion (except, ironically, Islam which liberals advocate for despite it being a religion that hates everything liberals claim to love).
The Founding Fathers were not "wild liberals" and you statement that "They base our form of government on Greeks and Native Americans" is just nuts. Who told you that? They are lying to you.
