When was that? Tuohy was lights out from the beginning of XC al the way through indoor last year. I recall thinking she was struggling when she ran the first 1500 outdoor race last year. I said she was worn down.

Yes exactly from Wake Forest on, which seems right based on Henes' interview. It was pretty obvious after sound running and in the post season.
You guys are so funny. As if everyone but Tuohy tapered for this meet. No. Everyone is training through this meet. Everyone. Valby is just going to get faster.
Tuohy hates to lose. But, she is training for something else.
She will continue to train through this. She’s essentially #2 in the nation (collegiately), training through.
She will; however, have Henes adjust her training so that she can go onto the Virginia course (where she holds the course record), and obliterate it, and win at Nationals.
Slight adjustment.
Back-to-back-to-back wins for NC State (the most important thing to her), and back-to-back for her individually.
With the above being said; however, I believe at this moment, NAU is the favorite on the WOMEN’s side as well!
And yet, they are not the favorite on the men's side.
It’s mid-season. This race is a snapshot in time and there are a lot of moving pieces between now and Nationals. Today was the first time Valby beat Tuohy. Hicks gained 18 seconds on Alex Maier between the cowboy jamboree and Nationals. Josh Kerr talked about not showing all his moves before worlds with Jakob. All hope is not lost for Tuohy fans, and Valby fans should be excited to see her racing fast. For the normal people, all we know about Valby and Tuohy is that it will take a very special performance by another woman to even get close to winning.
It's not like altitude but Gainesville swamp training builds toughness, summer humidity is insane here, you are breathing more water vapor than air some mornings, clothing soaked.
Last year I thought Valby looked a bit on the to thin side of things. She looked much stronger and healthier today. Will make racing in Va in a few weeks interesting
She looks GORGEOUS! I'm rooting for her and I hope we see a lot of her. So so glad she won.

The don't call it poor man's altitude for no reason. Training in the heat has similar effects.
That is interesting. Last year Tuohy ran 19:44 and this year, in much worse muddy running conditions she ran 19:29. But THIS year, her faster time simply meant she was only pacing herself. I think the only difference this year is that her faster time still finished 2nd.
What happens next is open to speculation but it is absurd to suggest she was only pacing herself or trained through the race with that time. Valby was simply better. Now Tuohy will have to see what she can do about it.
The whole top 20 ran faster and last year was more sit and kick the last km. So not really much of a point. Anyway read the write up leading up to the race. It was not even certain if her season would start here or at ACC. My guess is the plan was to run her first at ACC, befitting a later training start, but she had a good week and they decided to race her here. If they are trying to avoid a late season burn out, makes sense for her not to peak too early.
Anyway, we will see if my impression is correct.

I respect both young ladies enormous talent. I have to agree Valby did look much stronger and healthier this meet. I expect great things from both on U.S. teams maybe not next year but definitely starting 2025.
