Assefa only raced once this year on fresh legs. Hassan was busy racking up medals and battling the alleged GOATs in each distance she races and defeating most of them. Wait for the head to head, Assefa will fall to Hassan who has a much better 800m PR.
You forgot one important fact…
…Assefa smashed the world record while coming back from injury! Just imagine what she’ll be able to do if she gets a full year of training. Sub 2:10!!
I remember that same year she was beaten in a 1500m by a Moroccan women the first DL.
Runners like Mo Farah / S. Hassan will never be in the list of GOAT because they don't look naturally legit but transformed by the power of money.
Indeed. At least Mo won numerous gold medals. Here’s an inconvenient fact for Hassan fans: She’s 0-5 in her last 5 championship races. That’s right, 0-5! Can’t be the GOAT with a record like that.
Hassan loses championship races to Tsegay and Kipyegon, mostly the latter. That’s about it.
Wrong again. Here is a list of SEVENTEEN women who have defeated Hassan in championship races in the last 3 years while she has been in her prime:
Faith Kipyegon - 3 times Letesenbet Gidey - 3 times Gudaf Tsegay - 2 times Margaret Kipkemboi - 2 times Laura Muir Beatrice Chebet Dawit Seyaum Hellen Obiri Diribe Welteji Ejgayehu Taye Irine Kimais Alicia Monson Agnes Ngetich Ririka Hironaka Jessica Warner-Judd Grace Nawowuna Sarah Chelangat
For someone who is supposedly the GOAT, she sure loses a lot of races to a lot of people!
You realize how ridiculous you sound. Don’t be such a bitter hater. Would you like to list all the people Assefa has lost to on the track? Assefa may be better at the marathon, yes, she’s run faster, but Hassan has already beaten more impressive competition at 42.2, but regardless she can never approach Hassan’s career achievements. She was a B level track athlete.
False. Assefa is a sub 2 800 meter runner in her own right. Hassan loses far more championship races than she wins.
Ok, so 4 seconds slower than Sifan. Hassan is currently able to run 3:52-3 at least. You think Assefa can do that? Hassan loses championship races to Tsegay and Kipyegon, mostly the latter. That’s about it. If Hassan were to run the Olympic marathon fresh and train for it, these marathon runners are not beating her.
Hassan lost twice to Jenny Simpson in championship races. She has always been a poor tactical racer. That's the reason she is 1-6 lifestime in championship races against Kipyegon, who is a tactical genius.
She prefers to overwhelm her opponents with her strength and speed rather than rely on tactics. But when she can't do that she has usually come up short. She should have won medals in 2016 and 2017 and came up empty. Same in 2022.
Her poor championship career record on the track is why I put her behind Dibaba and Kipyegon as track distance GOATS. The marathon may be a different story. She is a better athlete than the current crop of female marathoners. Just stop messing around with the 1500. She had one great 1500 performance 4 years ago in Doha and has not come close to that since. Her second fastest 1500 was the race in Monaco in 2021 where she was crushed by Kipyegon.
Faith Kipyegon is impressive but only faster than Hassan in 3 distances (1500, mile, 5000). Hassan also has more championship medals and 2 world major marathons. The most impressive about Hassan is her crazy range (7th fastest 1500 and 2nd fastest marathon) which in my opinion, combined with her medals, makes her the GOAT. Remember only 6/7 weeks ago Hassan was competing at the WC in Budapest in 3 distances.
I break track into 3 categories: sprint, mid-d, and distance.
Or, even more purely, sprint and distance.
So far, I think the sprint GOAT is FloJo, including 100/200/400.
Mid-d GOAT? Kipyegon?
Distance GOAT, I would have to go with Hassan at this point, but that is Hassan… , because things are moving so quickly on the women’s side. I guess next year will add some resolution.
I am sure Assefa can go 2:10. Her thon was INSANE compared to Hassan’s. Yeah I know, different course, etc—but it made a lasting impression on me. THAT FINISH😳.
IMO it’s obvious that Assefa could crush an insane HM time, as well as a 10k time, but I think she’s in it for the money. Based on that alone, I would give it to Hassan.
I’m not arguing that Assefa is the distance GOAT. I’m stating that Assefa is a better marathoner than Hassan. And I’m demolishing the argument that Hassan is the distance GOAT.
Looking at Hassan's 800m time makes me think Faith can win Olympic gold at 800m next year if she chooses to, or at least lay down a 1:54 low time trial.

Kobe is the NBA player with the most career missed shots. LeBron is the NBA player with the most NBA playoff career losses. Are either not considered among the GOATS of basketball. Random example.. Dwayne Wade has more NBA final wins over LBJ. Who has had the best career overall between the two? My point is using losses alone to determine the GOAT status of an athlete is obsolete. Especially for professional runner who races ALOT across variousss different distances/terrains.
Your comparison is not relevant. Big difference between team sports and individual sports. It’s not crazy to expect a GOAT applicant to win at least half of their championship races and to keep at least one world record in a championship event while in their prime.
I hope Sifan Hassan limits herself to two events, 2024 Summer Olympics. Marathon at Olympics is strange. Women who cannot race sub-2:22:30 Marathon may medal. The good thing for S Hassan, Ethiopia & Kenya only are allowed three women each, Marathon.
If Sifan Hassan limits herself to 10000m & Marathon, she will have a realistic opportunity to earn gold in each.
Sifan Hassan will not earn 1500m gold, 2024. If S Hassan races 1500m, 2024 Olympics, she reduces significantly the probability of gold, any event.
