Twin Cities Marathon / 10 Mile CANCELED?

But we will have the USA Olympic Trials marathon at high noon in Orlando, Florida.

This is so ***** I can't believe it actually happened.

First off why cancel the 10-miler... It's 90 minutes after the start and 69 degrees.

Why wait until a few hours before the race to cancel when literally nothing has changed in the forecast over the last few days. Were they really expecting the forecast to drop 20 degrees overnight? Would've saved a lot of travel headache and goodwill.

Why not move the start time up 1 hour and cutoff the race at noon?

Why not blast loudspeakers telling runners to treat this is a fun jog or stroll and avoid an all-out effort? The only people that would truly be affected by this are the 5-6 hour fat jogwalkers that would be finishing during high heat.

From the beginning this was going to be a 26.2-mile training run for me for an ultra I'm doing in November, and I'm local, so I'm not too angry about this, even if I don't get back the $90 I paid last year. I just really enjoy being able to do one long training run on an interesting course with lots of other runners, without having to worry about hydration, dogs, strollers, stoplights, etc.

I ran the 2020 Disney Marathon in over 5 hours and got through right before they shortened when the temps hit 84 and humidity was 84%. It was open for 5 1/2 hours before they shortened it. I was fine at the end.

I ran the 2023 MOM marathon in over 5 hours where temps hit 84 and humidity was 60%. I was fine at the end.

No issues with either marathon because I trained for both and am not a wuss and I would have been furious in both cases had they canceled because of the significant amount of money I spent to travel there and stay there and run both. Unbelievable how many people on this thread are saying that they should have canceled the Minny marathon AND 10 miler. Sad that this is where we are in America in 2023, but not surprised given the snowflake brigade out there.

This will be a setback. Over the years, some quality runners have raced TC 10mi.

I ran Chicago in 2021 when it was 70+ at the start. I failed to reach my time goal of sub 2:35 but in no where did I say let's cancel the race.

This year the other day I was seeing 70+ for the overnight and I said f-me but not FU BOA/Chi. I would NOT expect someone to cancel the morning of in the 70s. Bush league or worse.

Also whether this resonates or not... global warming ain't going to make the fall temps any more bearable. Better toughen up because we're going to see much warmer days in our lifetime.

More like expect more cancellations in the future.

it is the 5+ hour jog/walk people who train minimally who create these situations. Chicago had to close the course after 3 1/2 hours in 2007 due to heat. The serious runners were finished by then .

Saw 3 girls running in full kit with numbers, on my way to the gym. F’n A, why waste all the prep. They had Camelbacks and looked solid.

Absolutely ridiculous! Just went for a 1 hour run in eden prairie before heading off to work, so I started a little before seven. The weather actually felt really nice compared to what I was training and racing in all summer. Ironman triathlons regularly have the marathon portion in the heat of the day, where it is often 80+, sometimes even 90+. And that is after doing 6+ hours of swimming/biking. TC organizers are clearly a bunch of jokers.

I am floored by this. America has sunk to a new level of softness.

The Des Moines marathon is Oct 15, or Kansas City is Oct 21, for anyone looking for a backup race.

I ran 20 miles on the race course this morning. What a dud. Felt fine. There was even a little breeze and in the shade it felt quite nice.

What do you do for water in a 20-miler? For my 10 in the heat, my wife rode beside me with a bunch of water…but I think I drink more than the average person.

Whether for or against the cancellation, I think we can all agree that we are all angry people before we get our daily run in. And the Bemidji Blue Ox marathon went from 114 participants in 2022 to having over 10,000 people signed up in 2023!

Hundreds of people with bid numbers were running around the lakes and on Minnehaha parkway when I was out there this morning. Not going to act like these are great conditions, but doable for anyone running under 4 hours.
