I predict Mu will not medal; Kelly will win by at least a stride, then Mary and Nia. Mu will realize coming in the last 50 meters that she is not going to win, lose focus and fade to 5th or 6th. Post race she will talk about her mental health and the non-track world will feel there is too much pressure on her for such a young age discounting the fact that she is the same age as at least half dozen other medalists.

If the field can get bodies around Mu - especially from 200-600 then it's going to be a very interesting final for the top 3 (who are sadly light years better than the rest).
I honestly think the vast majority of you are not understanding how insanely athletic and elegant that recovery was. Imagine running at 800 speed and within a few steps your body is facing 90 degrees from the direction it's moving.
99.99-whatever % of us go down and go down hard.
She made it look like a mid-race carioca drill.
That was some next-level ballet wizardry.
I'd love to see her take control from the gun and try to go wire-to-wire.
If nothing else the winning time would be fitting for a world champion.

LOL, called it as did a few others on this thread. Athing did NOT look comfortable or good in the prelims or semis. She has not raced enough this year, and the rest of the field has improved year-over-year.

Not sure what races LRC was watching when they wrote their previews for this event, but it wasn't this year's WC rounds.

I am very proud of Athing Mu bronze medal. I was hopefully optimistic but in reality with only 2 races before Worlds she was so under raced. She went for it still and I am elated for her 1:56.6.

Under raced and less than optimal training and STILL RUNS 1:56.6. Take your break, stay healthy, and give the world a sub 1:55 next year.

Honestly, bronze is an extremely impressive results when considering the circumstances

She ran one 800 this season before the WCs, right?

She rabbited the field through the first ~750m

She still medaled

Having coached a child-prodigy in the past, it's not hard to imagine Mu being pretty fried and in need of a mental break

Yeah, you still couldn't have been more wrong about this one. A little more nuance to the sport than just the measure of someones physical talent. But you'll get there the more you watch buddy!

Do you haters remember the young lady contracted COVID, was it once or twice? Her training was not optimal but I remained hopeful.

If someone does not look good in the prelims they rarely look good in the final. Before she was tripped up she did not look great in the prelim. It carried over.

Nice, also did not have Mu winning, but was surprised that Mary beat Keely. Ran a much cleaner race and deserved it. Mu's post race chat with Kersee must have been fun.

VIPAM with some good prerace 'hot takes,' but Mu was clearly shook from that semi fall and it affected her strategy in the final. She was not going to run away from this field... I appreciate she's won championships from the front before, but there were 2-3 women in this field who have shown this summer that they were fit & ready to sit on her shoulder and beat her.

Even so, another impressive championships by Mu and some great experience and valuable lessons learned. Amazing she's still only 21 years old! Her post race interview on youtube struck me as someone who was more relieved to be done than anything. She hinted at some issues (probably off the track) that she's been dealing with this past year... let's hope she's taking care of herself and using available resources to stay healthy physically and mentally. Hard to imagine having the world on your shoulders at age 20-21. Best of luck to her... she's a supernova in our track universe- just an unbelievable talent, tough as nails, and very likeable young lady.

But why would Mu be under trained OR under raced? I do not get that at all. And all this talk about the need for some training build up for Olympics over a year away, what is that BS? Seriously ? Same with McGlaughlin? Some were saying, so what is she didn't run...she can double at next years Olympics...Are you serious? Neither can handle the load to even dominate this year apparently? MU had run 1:55.0x before,,,and with her 400M speed wheels should have beaten this field anyway, this was not some Moral Bronze..please. Not many are getting the" kid gloves treatment they get..certainly not Jakob the other day? Kersee had two plainly favored for gold" medal highest profile athletes ever, one got an under performing bronze and one DNS'ed.

Again, why was Mu unfit? At this point?

why is VIPAM getting killed for this post? everything said here is perfectly reasonable. She does need to race more. HOpefully this result shows her that. Now she can take her little vaca and hopefully come back ready to compete next year.
