She's bigger than the Ethiopian runners, so I fail to see how she could be pushed around them.
This is the most idiotic argument. It's not the NFL or WWE. There's no defense when someone shoves you into lane 3 or sticks their arm out to impede you. Yes, Monson can hockey check them off the track but then she gets DQ'd.
Her height or weight has literally nothing to do with it.
What's idiotic about the claim that bigger runners should be better able to defend their space in races? But you have to try. Experience may teach her that this is the way the game is played at this level. But pushing doesn't account for being hammered on the last lap like that. She has the ability to maintain a very good pace at 5 and 10 but the change of gears at the end is still lacking even against her fellow Americans, so that's where they have to go to work, that and the confidence to move decisively.
One example - look at the Kenyan at 30:37 in the race. She just sticks her arm straight out to impede Monson. That should be a DQ.
Not sure of the rules on this, but couldn't she just knock the arm away, or would that dq her?
I remember reading years ago, that Bowerman would occasionally instruct his runners to gently "bump" into a competitor when the latter was in full stride, i.e. both legs off the ground, to disrupt their stride.

Monson ran a phenomenal race to get 5th in the 10k at the 2023 World Championships. She was a legit contender.
The Ethiopians and Kenyans impeded her multiple times in the last mile. Even when she had plenty of room to pass, they would move over and stick their arm out to impede Monson. She tried to make her move several times but the Africans just shoved her to the side. Unfortunately this cost her too much energy and drained her for the last 400.
If she learns to be more aggressive and not get pushed around so easily she could be a medal threat in 2024.
More American excuses. No one impeded her. This is racing. Welcome to the real world.

Every championship you hear excuses like this. Makes me wonder why there isn't a bigger focus on doing a lot of races on an international level to get used to how it is in the big circus.
Americans are soft. The rest of the women tried to shove Molly Seidel around too in the Olympic marathon and she moved to the other side of the road to avoid it all. It's like hazing. You have to prove yourself. Alicia needs to practice changes of tempo with her elbows out and elbows in her face—or midsection since she's relatively tall. Did you see Tsegay's leg was bleeding out well before any engagement with Sifan Hasan? Rupp knows how to race like this, which is why everyone found him annoying in the marathon, running too close.
We need to stop complaining and highlighting sections of the rulebook when people are just racing. People live all over the world surviving summer without an iced drink perpetually in hand.

But also, I am proud of Alicia too! Was psyched to see her in it when the bell rang. I just mean Americans in general are soft. Alicia prob is Wisconsin nice though.
