Natalie Cook “not allowed” to post on Strava?

Yes, I had totally forgotten about the incident until today and you can still run a quick Google search and get the details. I’m sure the event influenced the team standards around how the team conducts themselves online and I’m sure those standards have adapted to the times.

Also, Wetmore is old school and there is nothing wrong with that. Cook choose Colorado and presumably knew that Wetmore had an old school approach to things.

Some coaches don't want others seeing what they're doing. I think its a bit silly. A tempo run isn't sone ground breaking secret. The easy part of coaching is writing the workouts. The hard part is managing, motivating, and inspiring the athletes to create a fun, enjoyable, winning culture.

Also, part of it could be the better know individuals, particularly women, have to worry about stalkers and creeps on Strava. Like how Molly Seidel got men that started figuring out her usual routes and approximate location of her house based on her Strava posts. Need to be carefully what you post online when you have a larger following.

For a coach to hide "6x1000m in 2:55 with 2:00 rest" is like a chef hiding that "parsely" is in a dish's ingredients. The important thing is how everything is combined and tailored. Strava doesn't show you that.

For example, a coach can go online and read Michael Johnson's or Nick Symmonds's successful training in detail, but that doesn't mean they know how to write an effective program for their own athlete.

Would a ball sport post their entire playbook online? No they wouldn’t. They all run the same plays too. It’s the timing of them, the paces, the effort levels, the structure, the sequencing, the periodization. Even if it is an insignificant or marginal difference, why would other schools’ coaches and athletes seeing their entire training plan? I feel like this really shouldn’t be a suprise

I posted on the same thread for my senior year track season. People got upset I wouldn’t actually post my race times since I wanted to keep it anonymous and I got a FB message from someone who clearly invested a lot of time in figuring it out. Can’t be mad at that point.

I follow many atheltes who run for boulder and mark wetmore. I will say i do not know if i follow any women or not tbh i know my college girls team had issues with weirdos stalking their runs and going to their training locations when they normally ran there, this could be why. could also be because i know those atheltes and am on the okay to follow list? but i still run for a rival school

Posting on Strava can be dangerous for women, who have to worry about safety and crazy stalkers. Several women including Molly Seidel have talked about some bad experiences.

If you see posting workouts as similar to sharing a football or basketball playbook, you don't know anything about those sports, OR about running.

Plenty of track/XC alumni are on Strava. Few people over 40 spend time on Instagram.

No one is advocating following their gps. Following talented distance runners female or male is important to a lot of us that follow running. With the additions of Valby and Cook, they have made following college Running fun again. Also if you are married like I am, my wife who is new to running loves to see the updates from Cook and Valby. It motivates her.

Yeah I don’t think it’s training secrets. We have training down to a pretty good science now and it’s all on the internet if you’re willing to research it.

I think it’s moreso that Strava creates Strava warriors which you don’t want in a competitive program. People going too fast on easy runs cause they want people thinking their easy pace is fast, going too fast on tempo runs/workouts to make it look like they are higher caliber than they really are..

Lots of college guys doing stuff like 4 mile “tempos” at 5:00 pace and then failing to break 25 in 8k races or 15:00 for 5000m. I blame Strava for a lot of this, and coaches know race effort 2-3 times a week and zone 3-4 mileage for the other 3-4 is a recipe for disaster.
