All the time there are cross country coaches using 400 meter runners to have a full team, or having jumpers throw the shot put once to get a mark, or throwers running through the long jump it. I would say it happens at every DI meet people just are paying attention. Its not that easy to have 14 athletes in every meet with injuries, illness, eligibility, etc.

You are stating why T&F coaches early in the season need to bring more gals & guys to meets so it doesn't come down to this by May 5th to May 10th, not enough athletes at meets participating.

yah but yet somehow only the psu coach was negligent enough to f- it up...
every other tiny team made it work, the coach just gave up on his own athlete.
I guess at the end of the day it just wasn't that important to him
This absolutely sucks and the coaches should be fired and at least disciplined severely for this. Coaching isn't a life or death occupation, but this is an egregious error in judgement, costing someone his lifelong dream--the type of dream that gets kids up and running for their teams in the first place.
But Jordan should not run at Nationals.
Yes, this hurts to say. Yes its not his fault. No, there is nothing about this that is fair. Yes, the rule might even be stupid in the first place.
But Jordan should not run at nationals.
When rules are put in place, people need to comply and follow them. If a rule is broken, the consequences need to be carried out. That is the rule, those are the consequences. If exceptions are made for Jordan and his coaches, it would be unfair to every coach who broke their back to make sure that they were in compliance so something like this didn't happen to their athletes.
Fight the policy. There are plenty of stupid rules. Argue that the consequences are completely unfair, so it will be changed in the future, but exceptions to rules cannot ever be made.
I went to their schedule and count over twenty meets. Sure, some are on consecutive days and there could be some split-squad events or whatever, but it looks like the "8 meet" part wouldn't be the problem. It would be having 14 or more athletes compete at those meets.
Is that correct?
How many athletes short were they at some of these meets?

They clearly knew 14 was the limit, it's not a coincidence he had several meets at exactly 14 then some at 15 and 16. He was just negligent and didn't get enough. Why would they only bring 5 to their conference championship outdoors? They competed more athletes at the Portland Distance Carnival on the same weekend.
The problem appears to be far worse than mismanaging some paperwork. From Katie Camarena's (a volunteer asst coach at PSU who quit in protest of the new leadership) instagram:
"In the fall of 2021 Jordan and I both transferred to portland state because we believed in the future of the program and what the coaches were building there. We both had similar goals: to help elevate the program by competing at Nationals. After I graduated I wanted to stay at PSU to coach because I felt so strongly about the coaches, the future of the program & the team. Unfortunately, the coaches I was coached by, who I wanted to coach alongside, left. I soon followed because I felt as though the new staff was deceitful, unprofessional, unorganized and I did not support the new culture being implemented. In the 5 months since the new staff was hired, 9 men (almost 1/3 of the team!!!!) quit. Most of the others chose to enter the transfer portal or redshirt. Jordan even briefly entered the transfer portal! But, he chose to stay for his last season because of his goals & pride in representing PSU. There is an NCAA rule that in order to be considered a sport, 14 men must compete at 8 meets during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Because over half of the 30 man roster quit, transferred, redshirted or got injured, PSU was unable to meet this number. They had 6 meets where 14 men competed. The coaches admitted they knew back in February this would be a problem. But, nothing was done to remedy the situation! The punishment for this is that the PSU men will lose their post-season (regionals/nationals) But, the only man who had qualified is Jordan. So, because of the incompetence and indifference of the coaching staff Jordan is the only athlete being punished. His collegiate career is over. Why is the athlete being punished for the incompetence of the athletic department? Hopefully @ncaatrackfield will reconsider & let Jordan race!! I hope there is accountability on behalf of the athletic department, there should be repercussions for coaches who clearly don’t care about their athletes… If you have time please comment @ncaatrackfield to let Jordan race. And demand repercussions for the coaching staff and accountability from the athletic department by emailing the director of athletics John Johnson at

I admire Jordan for staying despite the team being a total dumpster fire. kids got integrity. he's right to be angry at how his coaches failed him after he stuck around and was clearly the only good thing about the team.
coaches should have recognized that, invested in his season, built the team culture around him. instead they screwed him.

(I counted 38 men on the roster, by the way).
I count 5 meets with 14+ athletes based on Portland State's TFRRS page ():
I cut your post down to the last two meets to question how in the world they would have more people at a distance carnival than at their conference meet, and if any athletes doubled back from the conference to the distance carnival, why?
How in the heck does a roster with nearly 40 guys only have five compete in the conference?
What is the rule for Minnesota? Just 4 outdoor meets?
I think the athlete should be allowed to compete but the school should be fined. Schools won't chose to violate the rule if it costs them more money than it would have cost to compete. They saved money now and didn't receive any consequence.
