About 1 in 3 garages in my middle class neighborhood are too crammed with stuff to house a car. And like us, many of the residents have more cars than garage space.
Boomers? 50 year olds (like me) are Gen-X from the 1990s. And our houses are paid off because we bought them 25 years ago.
Plus it is not boasting if all we are claiming is that our garages are too full of bikes, rowing machines, tools, and camping gear. That doesn't exactly sound like "bragging" to me.
All year my two semi spoiled teenage daughters cars are parked in the driveway. When they are home from HS/college/sports/activities they like to get their pu$ies stuffed by their guy friends in our garage.
wow. Ok pops. That’s kind of weird, but you do you.
Some people use their garage for other things - a work space, a home gym, a place to practice music, a hangout with a pool table, etc. There are all kinds of things you can do with a garage without using part of your home to store a vehicle.
Only in the north where you car could get iced over or something is parking in a garage really a big thing. Otherwise people really only do it if they have more cars than can fit in the driveway.

I've seen more cars on the driveway, what's preventing you from parking in the garage?
Many detached garages were built in the 1920's, 30's 40's and 50's
The garages were very small. It made no sense, because the cars were very big.
People tend to not consider the small garages today, and just used them as a shed.
Normal 24x24 garages, should have plenty of room. no excuse unless you are a hoarder
I really think that depends on where you live. Our garage is a 24x24 and I can only fit one car in it if I am lucky. We have a Kubota with a front bucket, back blade and box blade we use for maintaining our property that we park in the garage with all of the attachments. It doesn't matter how efficiently you organize there is no parking two cars in that. Most of the time we can't park anything at all in the garage because in the summer there are kids bikes and toys that are being used. I can't hang them or we are constantly having to get them for the kids. You still have a leaf blower, chain saw, rotary spreader, weed whipper, tiller, wheelbarrow. generator (because we lose power a lot), winter tires for the cars and all of my tools. None of that is junk. All of it gets consistently used. Not everyone lives in a manicured subdivision.
I bought a house on some acreage in the mountains a couple years ago. We live up a .75 mile gravel road. Pretty remote and we are not on town or county maintained roads so there is no street parking option.
The house came with a detached one-car garage and a small, well maintained, red barn further down in the woods of the land.
We park our cars in the gravel parking area in front of our garage.
The garage near the house stores my tools, workbench, bikes, skis, and workout equipment. It's great to have a space for that to keep it easy to access and organized.
We turned half of the barn into into a chicken coop, and the other half of the barn is used to store the riding mower as well as maintenance equipment for the mower.
Those are the reasons why we don't park our cars in the garage nor in the barn.
There are two types of people we are referring to. People who use their garages to park their cars and people who park their cars wherever they want. We park our cars in the garage because that's the kind of people we are.
The unusable garage exists as an example of not being in harmony with ones inner self so they acquire "stuff" on the journey down this path of never ending unhappiness. TV, society and other media tells you all the toys and gadgets your children needs, when a couple of stuffed animals and your time is what they really need. To burden and curse your loved ones in the event of passing, leaving them days and weeks sorting through items that are mostly useless and unwanted by the survivors. Hobbies which come and go but the stuff you acquired remains "just in case" you do it again. To justify to Letsrun readers that your garaged is stuffed for important reasons.
I live in a rural college town. I have a semi-circular driveway, so if I leave the cars outside the garage, I can just pull straight through when I'm leaving. The angle of the garage requires a tight three-point turn to pull in and an equally cumbersome maneuver when pulling out. There's no benefit to having the cars in the garage. It's small and detached, so it's slower and more annoying getting to the house if I pull into it. I only use it for the cars if it's snowing. Otherwise, I use it as a workshop and for storage. It's not so full that I couldn't pull the cars in. Though, admittedly, I have to move the mower, wheelbarrow, and workbenches around to accommodate the vehicles.
Why the eff did I just take the time to explain that?
Yes! We have a 3 car garage. His car goes in the garage. My car goes in the driveway. I take the kids to school long before he leaves for work. It rains/snows/hails/is very hot regularly. I work too but it is part time because I am the default parent an am contrained to school hours (yes I make more per hour). I always take the kids in my car and do 99% of drop off/pick up duty. I can run faster than him. His car is worth a little more than mine but its still a Honda. He says "but my car" anytime I complain that it can be a safety issue with the toddlers and stresses me out. He also never gets up early enough to help me scrape off my car when it snows. He does not work more than 40 hours a week, just has an ego about it. Should I get a divorce?
Always amazes me that it's ok if the man is doing more. But, the woman is??? Whoa!!! "Good times and bad, meant...you know, you have good times, but not bad times...so.."
