No program has unlimited resources, but I'll still bite. Why not use the model that produced 42 National Championships. John McDonnell built Arkansas from absolutely nothing. What was the formula? First, great, tough 1500 guys who could run anything from 800 to 5K and compete in cross country - all on a national scale. Second, horizontal jumpers who can sprint. John didn't like pure sprinters as they were more injury prone than the jumpers who could sprint. Maybe the jumping somehow worked the body in a way to make it less injury prone. Seems counterintuitive, but it worked. Double these guys up and you get a lot more bang for your buck. Add in some 10K guys, throwers, high jumpers, pole vaulters each on minimal financial aide. Finally, and most importantly, have a distance coach, field event coach and sprint coach who know their stuff and can motivate and there you have it! Go back to the late 70's to the early 00's and the formula was the same. I can tell you from experience, it wasn't the facilities. They sucked until about 2000.
