NYC to pay top Non Binary finisher

Lol at this post. You don't even understand the issue. Trans runners don't identify as "non-binary"--they usually identify as women or men. "Non-binary" is a separate category, which may or may not include trans runners.
It all should be pretty simple. Running is divided by biological sex and age. Not skin color, not self perceptions, not weight, not height, not fashion preferences.

Not all non-binary people are transgender and not all transgender people identify as non-binary. So this is not a "transgender" issue, as many non-binary people do not identify as a women at all, thus would never race in the woman's division. This allows for those outside the normalized gender spectrum to run as themselves. If someone identifies as a women, then they run in the women's category, if they don't, they dont run in that category.

I think that having a non-binary option for registration is a nice thing to do, but offering prize money, let alone equal money to the men's and women's categories is self-evidently ridiculous. It's fine if you want to use running as a means of expressing your gender identity, but there should be a tradeoff between doing that and taking running seriously as a competitive endeavor.

What it comes down to is the fact that NYRR and similar big-city running organizations serve a very progressive customer base. While even most left-leaning people can see that this is silly, they'll just whisper about it and quietly roll their eyes rather than boycotting events or publicly saying anything that could be deemed as anti-LGBT. Meanwhile, the people who are pushing for this are very loud, and not doing what they want can lead to major headaches. So strictly from a business perspective, I can understand why NYRR decided to make this policy.

Being transgender is not necessarily the same thing as entering in the non-binary cataegory. This doesn't solve the transgender issue. It would seem more likely a transgender person might enter as non-binary but some transgender people say they are women and want to enter as women. Doesn't solve the problem in that case at all.

Just gets us back to the main issue. The categories for prize money should be based on biological sex not gender.

This is the solution right here. What would add a huge dose of comedy is if "actual" non-binaries complained that the winners weren't real non-binaries.

I deleted a post commenting on how one of the winners of the non binary division in some of these races looks. We don't need to get into individual cases in this thread. The poster was saying the person had a beard before they identified as non-binary. Who cares? Many non-binary people are people who might have identified as more traditional gay or lesbian 10 years ago. They are often not transgender.

But how someone looks or identifies doesn't influence how they perform in sport so we don't need a prize money category for it.

What if I told you - there are no "real" non-binaries.

There should be two categories:

1) Open

2) Female (as in born female)

Transitioning? Open

Non-Binary? Open

Half-unicorn? Open

Male? Open

Open is open to all, all-inclusive and WOKE! Open accepts all! Even women if they want.

The funny thing is that the non-binary category with prize money will soon be very competitive. If checking a box is all that is needed to be non-binary, then who can't check a box for $5000?

If their intent is not to include transgender runners in this category, then I'm obviously wrong about its potential impact on women's division.

As someone active in the LGBT+ community I can tell you this category doesn't solve the issue of people competing outside their birth sex. Some non binary people do call themselves trans but many transgender people aren't non binary.

I really do wish the large prize money would stop. Im afraid it's hurting the community more than it helps. My friends who are non binary runners don't seem to want to win money, they just want to be able to sign up under the non binary category, run an average time, challenge themselves, and have fun. Just like anyone else.

Instead of just flying under the radar the community is mocked on letsrun because of what is presumably a few people are pressuring these races to do. I wish this prize money stuff would just stop. Let's find a solution that works for both sides.

Here's a solution. Allow "nonbinary" on registration form. Even list finishers times in finish order in nonbinary. Who cares?

But no prizes for goodness sake, especially not cash. You can't have prizes when there is no WA or USATF guidance on non-binary. You can't give prizes in a unitary division that includes both birth-males and birth-females. You can't give prizes when some members of the group will be using drugs to assist their chosen gender transition. (That's fine. Again, who cares? We don't care about individual decisions as long as the individual isn't then claiming the right to prizes in a completely unregulated division.)

Purely as a theoretical, and I know it won't happen, but it's a fair question: What happens if a nonbinary runner wins the race outright? Do they get the top prize money award? Why or why not, and how does this square with inclusivity and equality?

So basically they are doing their part to further gender inequality by creating a second men's division that can receive prize money. Pro men and pro women get a chance at prize money...and then so do mediocre men. Mediocre women...you get nothing and you will like it.

Non-binary isn't even a thing. literally. It's Non-something. You're going to award cash prizes to someone who just says they're not male or female.

It's not about their intent; it's about the athelte's.

I think we've asked people for their "gender" for ages, but it was really a proxy for sex.
