It is about time a powerful individual such as Knight has had enough with the societal catastrophe that is going on right now. I just hope more powerful people fallow his lead and get our country back on track.
The main problem in Oregon is homelessness and property crime. In terms of violent crime Portland is one of the safest large metropolitan areas in the US (in contradiction to the hysteria stirred up by Fox News to scare old people).
Here is an article about how the worst crime states are actually Republican controlled. Personally I don’t think there is a Democrat vs Republican link, it is more driven by socioeconomic status and poverty.
Totally misleading study. Obviously poverty will be the biggest predictor of crime. But what is omitted from the article is that the area's in many of those red states where violent crimes are so high are completely Democrat run. For example St. Louis is an extremely blue city which has high rates of crime. I would also discount some of the data coming from blue areas where you have radical DA's regularly choosing to not prosecute or criminalize things that a red area DA is going after you for.
If you go to a city that is more red leaning say the Dallas Fort Worth area the level of safety you'll feel on the streets and level of homelessness is nothing like what you see in these cities where Democrats have one party control.

Great post. The democrat controlled cities are dangerous and reduce the quality of life of their citizens. The republicans aren’t much better, but they are not as bad as the leftists. Good on Phil Knight.
Vote out democrats at all levels of government, and quality of life will improve.
Yes, your statistics are true. However, if you avoid ghetto Democratic areas, your likelihood of being shot goes down to basically 0%.
Maryland is the highest income state, but has a high murder rate. However, if you don’t count Baltimore (and PG county to a lesser extent) the murder rate goes WAY down. And if you go even further and discount the sketchy areas in Anne Arundel / Baltimore / Charles counties, there are fewer than 100 homicides in the entire state.

You make an excellent point. I would argue however that poverty might be a predictor of certain kinds of crime, namely street crime like assault, petty theft, public drunkenness, etc. crime in wealthier neighborhoods probably is harder for a street police force to pin down. But it’s there, for sure.
Pretty much everything that can be said about Oregon can be said about Colorado. Homeless camps all over the place, rising crime, dirty needles and poop on the sidewalks:
Not too much on the reasoning but Knight did speak to the Times which said Knight was "frustrated with what he described as a lurch too far to the left in the state’s government"
One amazing quote from Phil:
"One of the political cartoons after our legislative session had a person snorting cocaine out of a mountain of white,” Mr. Knight said. “It said, ‘Which of these is illegal in Oregon?’ And the answer was the plastic straw.”
..
So the guy who started Nike is upset with because of acceptance and tolerance of drugs? Seriously? That’s rich.
Interesting article in the NY Times this weekend which explained how the Nike founder has had enough of the way Oregon politics is going. Initially he funded the independent candidate for governor in Oregon, traditionally a reliable liberal state. Now he has shifted his donations to the Republican candidate, as he'll do anything to defeat the Democrat.

Plus this one: "Nike has good leadership. They make choices, whatever they want, but I think I’m more conservative than Nike.
Also interesting that it says the current governor Kate Brown (who I only know for helping fund the Worlds) is least the popular governor in the US according to polling

There needs to be a program that targets homeless on the streets. And is a work program / rehab community/ getting license/ gym program…. Shelters have a lot of work program but they are not good enough of a rehab community.
