To add the the high altitude climber part... Reinhold Messner, the first person to do a solo Everest Ascent without oxygen, had his VO2 max tested, and it was simply above average (48.8 ml/kg/min).
Also, he claims that he's seen Yetis, but I'm willing to bet that was hypoxia-induced hallucinations
