The other things that hamstring most California public schools is the difficult admissions process, most worthwhile majors are impacted (read: full, wait listed), and a general mediocrity when it comes to sports.
No kidding lmao, I got rejected by Cal Poly, UCI, UCSD, UCLA, UCB, UCSB, and SDSU with a 4.2 gpa and 33 act last year. Applied as a CS major so I might've gotten in to some of them if I had chosen something less impacted, but the fact is unless the coach has a significant influence on the admissions office, 70 percent or more of prospective recruits will be rejected by the university before they even get a chance to prove themselves on the track.

Nobody says he's a terrible coach, but some think he's not such a great person.
Newbury Park may not have been quite as good because some of the questionable recruiting and other rule breaking may not have happened, but the Youngs and Sahlmans would have been great anywhere. If they had all ended up at the same school with a reasonable coach, they would have pushed each other to a similar place.
Sean Brosnan has received a fair share of criticism, and it's up to the individual to decide if some or all of the criticism is warranted. But what I'm seeing in this thread and in other threads is the sort of pack attacks often found on social media, such as Twitter. This sort of "criticism" does not seek to engage or illuminate but rather demonize and discredit, with perhaps the intention of making Brosnan a pariah. I doubt that that will happen, but the people who do this are probably the same ones who level charges of PEDs at athletes any time they feel like it, and often without any justification. People like this do not deserve any reply.

Brosnan has changed the game in High School distance running and we can all see that. No matter what he or other great coaches do the same people will cry or say foul. It's just what people do when they are envious of others and their success.
In the world today social media (Instagram , twitter, these message boards, etc) can cause depression and the loosing touch with reality.
If you are taking the time to discredit someone or say hatful comments on any of these platforms it says a lot about your own happiness or should I say unhappiness.

He didn’t recruit and never had an incoming class with 5 sub 5:00 1600 runners.
SLO has a ton of potential and I am hopeful that Van Hoy can realize that potential. With all due respect to the late Mark Conover, I don't think that he was a very aggressive recruiter. Can many talented athletes not get admitted to their preferred institution? Are the better California kids heading out of state? I often wonder why schools like SLO, SDSU, and UC Santa Barbara are not better running schools because the training conditions and facilities access are darned near perfect in my mind. My best running happened when I was living in Long Beach. Other than not having easy trail access, tracks and traffic free bike paths were plentiful plus favorable weather was always motivating.
I’m to lazy to ready the whole thread and someone prob said it already but schools like ucsb, slo, sdsu all have trouble because even though it is a great place to live, hang out, chill and party it can be tough to be a competitive dialed in runner at a place where everyone else is drinking, partying and lounging in the glorious CA sunshine. Places like BYU, for instance, thrive because the surrounding area is wack and people don’t drink and party. Kids go there only because they are good at running and they want to be good… kids go to ucsb and sd because it’s fun and by the beach and they can also run, huge difference in mental game.

Pretty sure that class of 2023 and class of 2026 are the only 2 classes that had 5 guys go under 5 minutes before going to high school.
And Nico Young never broke 5 minutes before going to high school
Nicholas Goldstein, Colin Sahlman, Zaki Blunt, Daniel Appleford and Dev Doshi were also sprinkled in there to fill in the blanks. That's like 15 kids in that time period on one team that all ran faster than 5:00 for 1600 before stepping on campus. Not such a bad place to start.
Nico ran very close to sub 5:00 and he was about 3 feet tall and 17 lbs at the time, so VERY impressive!
Brosnan absolutely deserves a shot as an assistant at a high level if he wants it, it remains to be seen if he'd make a good college head coach.
If you are a sprint/jumps coach and you can delegate off to him, sure it is worth the risk. The issue is will he get enough talent to show what he can do. Most of those programs aren't investing enough in distance. If he goes to some random bottom half DI program, I am sure he will do a great job into turning the 4:25 recruits into 14:10 5k runners. Nobody will notice....
In an XC/distance program, the HC is going to want to train the distance guys. You need a really unique place where is getting talent but not running the show
