No inside curb/rail during Gary Martin's sub-4 Mile - DOES IT COUNT?

I am quite disgusted by the "records" that are kept by the Federation. At least many of the super stupid state federations have lost their stranglehold on the student-athletes that they still had at the turn of the century. Those little dictators have had to cede a lot of their petty power trips.

Gary usually sets up the cones, but he forgot as he was busy taking down hurdles and weighing throwing implements.

What's the math on this one? Here's my math:

4 inches closer = 0.64m shorter per lap (2 * pi * 0.102m)

4 minute mile pace is about 6.7 m/s

So that 4 inches gets you about 0.1 second per lap (0.64 / 6.7), not 1 second.

This is where the USATF rules get confusing. Rule 263 says:

The confusing part is that Rule 160.3, which is for railed tracks, is specific about cones or flags for sections missing the rail, while Rule 160.2, which spells out the 20/30cm issue, says nothing about cones for such non-rail tracks.

It's not just tracks that are measured differently, lanes are measured differently on a railed track. i.e. Lane 1 is supposed to be measured differently than Lanes 2-8 on a railed/curbed track.

I would like to mention that I wouldn't be surprised if a whole bunch of HS and even college tracks are not measured correctly by the builders.

Any legit track has a curb. Some might only put it in for completion.

Correction: I ran on some cinder tracks in the 90s that had concrete curbs.

A cinder track with curb is just around the corner actually 46.866259, -113.991503 Toole Park Missoula MT 59801. Takes some courage to run on it however. Needs help.

Yes, high school records are not USATF or World Athletics records. So the record rules for those organizations don't apply.
