Tuohy roe bush Mercy Nichols... Top 5 in that order... Won't be super fast... 1525 to 1540... Tuohy has the edge fast Bush has the edge slow...
You’re dreaming if you think Nichols is finishing 5th in that group. 🙄
Bush will beat Nichols... Nichols ran fast in a race with pros that was a time trial. Bush is a 204-800 m runner that has better closing speed. And the race will be that fast I doubt it'll be below 15-20... Probably more like 1525... Nichols won't finish higher than 5th
im a tuohy fan but im more concerned of abby nichols (if she goes to run the 5000m only) than taylor roe or mercy chelangat or sam bush .. heck i feel like jenna magness will finish higher than bush
mercy indeed has improved and looks so stronger than indoors but i dont think she can outkick tuohy or nichols, if she runs the 10000 or even if she dont
taylor roe can hang in a fast race but has no kick that we know of
sam bush has a kick but cannot hang on a fast pace
nichols has both, she can hang on a fast pace and can kick
katelyn can hang on a fast pace and has an improved kick
whoever wins depends on the type of race, and of course who even peaks on time for nationals
its going to be an exciting one because theres so many strong runners this year
if mercy will not make it a fast race, tuohy will ... because she can and she knows a lot of girls has better kick than her and she cannot just rely on a kick to win a race when you have an abby nichols who can run a 65s last lap in a freakin 15:15 5000m
look at how she ran that 1500m at acc... started fast, stayed fast, finished fast. that is the classic katelyn tuohy race tactic ... if you can run fast, why not run fast from wire to wire
If I remember right, Roe's close was quick enough to win a 3000 race in March.
I believe Nichols, Chelangat and Covert will all do both 10k / 5k. I also suspect 5k will be fast.
I might add Haley Herberg and Allie Schadler to the 10/5 list. Note sure about Lauren Ryan. Not sure what to think about Lauren Gregory. She might even do 1500. Everyone who does the 10 might as well declare for the 5. But I do think there is a reason they had Bush post a time for the 1500 after the 4:11 leg at Penn.
Yeah when all the top runners had doubled and just ran a tough 5K less than 24 hours earlier. Almost every other runner in that race had doubled at Nationals. Roe has no chance...
Roe is a very good runner. Two time top ten in XC. She has a chance. Now if I pick her she has no chance in hell. But I have no malice in the game.
Yeah if she can convince all the top runners to run a hard 5K the night before the national championship then she has a really good chance but considering that is unlikely she has very little chance
I tend to agree. Still she ran an excellent 5000m time this season. And there are too many variables to rule anyone out.
well true, idk how she ran her 5k qualifier and what state she was after the 5k but if she can run 15:25 then she can be in it.. in not ruling her out as she has good endurance
we can all say our predictions but it really depends on who can peak properly, and if they have a good or bad day .. so many variables as you say
i would hope everyone peaks properly and has a great day so we can see the 5k record get shattered!!!
ps. when katelyn tuohy sets her mind and body into a race, confident and running her own race like the acc 1500m ... no ones beating her, theres just no way they will beat her.
There is no way the 5000m record is going down in a Championship race. Is Tuohy capable of doing it….absolutely! But she is not going to risk a title buy trying to break a record, that is why like Henes her fastest 5k was not at NCAA championship, but at a regular season meet last year. Tuohy will try next season more than likely. it does not matter what the pace of the race is, I believe if Tuohy waits to the 800m to go she wins. She is one of two runners in the field that has the speed and strength to drop a 2:10-2:12 800m at the end of a 5k. It would be foolish to lead when you have the ability to run a 4:06 1500. That kind of speed and strength is not common for most college 5k runners.
When you go for a time in a championship race and you are not feeling good that day, you are at risk of not even getting on the podium. I’m sure coach Henes is going to want her to sit until at least the 800 to go mark. There is a reason she went all out in that 1500m and still dropped a 63 last 400. If she is patient she will win. And I agree with some others that Bush will probably run the 1500. That is why she ran the 800 at ACC’s. We could see Bush win the 1500 and Tuohy win the 5k.

When Roe ran her qualifier she hung back, and then ran about 5:50-55 for her last 2,000 m 71/71/71/71/71 or something. Just blew the race open. Sound familiar?
A 417 runner will beat a 406 runner in a likely tactical race?
Roe is a lot faster than 4:17...just ran 4:13 winning by a bunch and 4;33 (mile) indoors beating Gregory. I would not be surprised to see Roe beat all the runners in the 5000 who run the 10000 first.
