Should one team with a few elites be able to change a pre-published schedule to accommodate their desire to compete in an elite, non-CIF meet, affecting many many other athletes? ABSOLUTELYNOT
Read my post above...other coaches in the league have to vote on such schedule changes and if they approve...why does this thread even matter?
Let me clarify. I don’t blame Coach Brosnan of Newbury Park for requesting this. He’s seeking after his own self-interest and his team. The fault is with the Athletic Directors and Coaches who voted to approve this (and I understand that not all coaches were brought into the loop). Just because it got through and got approval doesn’t make it right. Still gotta call BS when you see it.
Yes and place in top 5, or so in most leagues to advance.
In California there are at large times. If you don’t place, but have an at large time you advance.
There been times in the past the every runner a final race at the Southern Section made it to the state meet.
If the coaches in the league agree to move the league finals so that Newbury Park can run at Penn then that means they understand these type of runners on the same team come around once in a millennium and they are supportive of them. So stop being jealous and tip your hat to those coaches. This is good for track and field.
no. it's good for 4 kids. 4 kids who already have ridiculous advantages compared to 99.99999% of runners in the USA.
What advantages do those kids have besides tremendous running talent? The one month at altitude is more about comradery more than running. What else?
unless the marmonte league operates different than the rest of the world, it was probably 2 or 3 people making the decision. not every other coach getting an actual vote. but maybe im wrong.
You are definitely wrong that other leagues do indeed have coach votes to modify schedules. It never even goes to any AD's desk. I remember one year a sprinter who was a 10.6 guy false started and was way better than everyone in the league and was DQ'D at League Finals. Well the coach lobbied the other coaches to vote him through and they did to CIF Prelims. You see...many of these coaches are friends. They wanna help each other out and especially with the history NP can write. It's not about giving them what they want or being jealous/vindictive. And for what it's worth the league I coached in was about 30 minutes from where the Maramonte League is so I doubt it's much different.

I don't think they are all friends in this case. Check out the action on Twitter with Rich Gonzalez's announcement. The head coach from Thousand Oaks, who happens to be a former Olympian, was not part of the decision process and hardly seems thrilled.

Yeah I just read that. It does not sound like the communication was not all there and that ain't right. But if she is a past Olympian...she should know what it takes to compete at a high level and if this record wants broken...Penn could be the place to do it. Seriously...why not just vote to have all NP athletes move on and keep the same schedule? They are so much better than everyone. I saw that snarky comment by the coach that they don't even participate in dual meets. Who cares? I remember one year a team used every dual meet as tempo runs in XC and lost and then came back and got second at states and just missed going to NXN.
ok its set a national record as a team surrounded by elite competition in an iconic invite OR win a 3200 by 18 seconds and earn a distinction they've already surpassed in xc
Make that choice on your own, but don’t screw a couple hundred other kids so you can have your cake and eat it too.
that wasn't the argument lmao. the argument was states vs penn. not the ethicality of their choice
I'm not from America so only really see Newbury Park mentioned on the boards - can someone explain whats so different about them compared to a normal HS? Is this like an NBA super-team of HS talent that uses its leverage for bigger meets/sponsorship etc?

The weird thing is that Newbury Park is mostly a typical, publicly-funded secondary school with a typical number of (mostly) 14-18 year old kids. The school is mostly attended by kids who live within some designated boundary, but it's also part of a larger school district that includes a few or maybe a dozen other high schools. Like in many school districts these days, if there's space in another school available, a kid who attends one school in the school district can choose to attend that school. Maybe it's more convenient, or they have a reputation for better academics, or the kid's into acting and the school has a strong drama program. Often the schools with wealthier students on average are harder to transfer into.
With Newbury Park's distance program, you have a situation where a few kids who are real generational talents are in the same place as a coach who seems to be quite good at developing talent and maximizing performance, and that has motivated some other very good distance runners in the district to transfer to Newbury Park (which isn't the richest school in the district), resulting in a team of unprecedented strength at the high school level. For example, my former high school (with a pretty good history in distance running) is now over 50 years old. The fastest runner of all time at my high school might not make NP's top 7 for just this year.
The weird thing is that there's really no reason that you couldn't have the same thing happen in plenty of other of schools. Free intradistrict transfer policies are pretty common. We actually have seen something similar in other places recently (Loudon Valley, for example). But the accomplishments of the NP team are at a whole new level, leading to much acrimonious discussion about talent and coaching. All motivated by only the purest of intentions, of course.

California is a large state with many school districts and sections, especially So Cal. The intra-district transfer policy is different for many sections (why? I don't know). High Schools are bound to specific boundaries. Some districts require a "Sit Out" period after an athlete transfers to discourage just this type of situation. Football in So Cal is especially egregious doing this. They'll have kids transfer for just the fall semester and return back to their original school for the winter and spring. If kids/parents want to register at a certain school within their district and stay there, that's fine.
do you have to run league to enter sections/state in Cali?
not the way it is in NY. you hit a qualifying time at any point in the season to go to the state qualifier (sectionals).
Yes you do. CA HS grad here.
I actually have a funny story about CIF qualifying. As a junior I ran 4:09 at the CA state meet and placed 3rd behind two seniors. The following year, my senior year, I did not know and my coach did not inform me there was a qualifying standard for 2nd place at league finals. My twin was on the same team and he also ran 4:09 as a junior. I broke my foot in December and didn't start running again until early February so I had no plan to race him at league finals. I went out and jogged a 4:3x, I forget the exact time. Anyways, I qualified for CIF by 0.1 seconds and had no idea. My coach ran down the stairs shouting what the heck were you doing, you almost didn't qualify. In retrospect it would have been better to miss the 1600 because my coach had me double 1600/3200 all the way to state my junior year and senior year but I wasn't in the same shape. I only ran 4:12 my senior year and probably could have easily won the state title in the 3200 if I was fresh since it was a slow race, which was suited for my sit and kick style. Anyways, it would have been a funny story if the top returner from the year before failed to qualify out of league finals.
Godfrey proposes a return to the previous league schedule, “I want to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone’s collegiality in the process, and the overall willingness to accommodate the athletes for this special occasion.”
So now, after moving the Marmonte League finals to suit their wishes, Newbury Park is pulling Colin Sahlman and Lex Young out of CIF post season competition. The selfishness and narcissism have no bounds!!

You can believe what you want but it seems to me that Colin and Lex made the decision to drop out of CIF qualifying.

Of course it was their final decision, but if you don’t think Brosnan orchestrated and suggested what he thinks they should do (skip CIF) you’re crazy. He wants to job knob with the pros and avoid the high school scene as much as possible where he is an outcast with the other coaches.
