The only reason this is even getting hate is because it’s the NP kids. If this was 2015 and Grant Fisher decided he was doing the 800 at indoor nationals you all would be cheering him on for running a wide range of distances. You people are pathetic.
Also, this isn’t the NCAA. There are no qualifying times to hit. These national events are glorified invitationals mainly contested by people on the east coast. It is up to the discretion of meet organizers to place runners in the right heats, and thank god they have enough of a brain to put two of the best HS distance runners this country has ever seen in the fast heat of a race, instead of chucking them in the slow heat. But keep complaining, Mrs. Donahue
And since these glorified invitationals are sponsored by New Balance and Nike, those 2 companies want more people to watch, and putting known names in the fast heat gets more people to watch than if they put in a fast Joe Schmo that no one has heard of. It's a business.
This isn't a championship meet, it's entertainment. NP is the hottest thing in high school distance running right now. They create interest in the meet. And meet directors do this all the time. They put high school runners in Pre over runners with faster times. Do you think they should stop doing that? I'm sure there were guys with faster times that could have put in the races at Dr. Sander over the NP guys. They let Nico run in Boston to set the high school record and left faster runners out.
When runners who got left out of the fast heat start running fast enough for a lot of people to notice they won't have to worry about making it into the fast heat.
Exactly. Im gonna watch the 4 x mile and 800 this weekend and I havent watched New Balance Nationals since I was in HS. NP is just exciting, its good for the sport.
Utter drivel. 3:58 is better than anything north of 1:50.00. Please come up with evidence supporting otherwise from credible sources (a la actual results).
Already learning from the pros that the best way to succeed is to duck your best competition and any pressure of competing head to head (as in, spawning discussion of who might have the edge over the other)!

Sumner announced a few weeks ago he was going to be running the 400 at nationals, not the 800, before any of the Newbury Park Boys said which events they would be running. And none of the Newbury Park boys are 400 runners.
No one is ducking anyone. They're just good at different distances, that's all.
This harkens back to the days when they're were two competing indoor HS Nationals, one at the Armory and one down in Maryland on a flat 200m track - the National Scholastic Indoor Championships. The former meet was sprints heavy since it was on a banked track, and the latter was more distance heavy since it was run on a flat track.
Everyone would lament the absence of many head to head battles, and just like now, Nike came in and bankrolled the new NSIC meet.
Wow really got me, Sahlman only ran 1:50 to finish 2nd after a couple losers on here were throwing a temper tantrum that he didnt belong in the 1st heat. Absolute losers.

I think they did. You sure sounded like you were going to relish the chance to rub it in everyone’s face. Now that he didn’t it’s all a “yeah but”. You got roasted!
Sahlman gets second over all the heats at his meet in the 800m, sub 1:51. His younger brother gets fifth overall. So, was Colin Sahlman undeserving or what?
