Not banned, just have to compete against those they were born like. Why is that a problem?
It’s a problem because I don’t care what a person was; I care what a person is.
I used to be six years old. Does that mean I should compete against six-year-olds? Bernard Lagat was born Kenyan. Does that mean he should have never been allowed to compete at US champs?
People can change genders. When they do, it doesn’t matter what they were “bOrN LiKe.”
The problem here is with the word gender. It's not a precise, scientific term. The meaning of the word have evolved over the years, and really it just means whatever people want it to mean. It comes from the Latin word for "type, kind." It applies to the gender of nouns in languages that have gendered nouns (which has little to do with being masculine or feminine). For a while it was used in a roughly equivalent manner as biological sex, but more recently has evolved into a fuzzier concept. Since it doesn't really mean anything precise or scientific, we shouldn't be using it to determine who plays in what sport.
Biological sex is precise and scientific. And should be used as the basis for deciding which sport category people play in. You cannot change your biological sex. You may be able to take hormones and have plastic surgery to resemble the opposite sex, but you cannot change your biological sex. Yes, there are intersex people and outlier cases that should be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Create more categories. Have boys and girls( like we currently have) then also born as boys and born as girls. Then the original categories will be filled with “identityers” and then the new categories will be what is has been like before, and do the same at ncaa. In time we will see which one becomes more accepted and one of the categories will either disappear or fade to obscurity
Never thought I would say this, but it looks like the leaders in Iowa are some of the most sane in the country at the moment.
Hello. No. Just more bigots like let’s run
Let's look at the Oxford definition of bigot:
"a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, especially one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group."
Ironically, you insult those with whom you disagree by calling them "bigots," but in doing so, you demonstrate your own bigotry. Instead of supporting your position with a sound argument, you resort to insults.
Another irony: I'm surrounded by liberals in my everyday life, and I am a liberal. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people express their disbelief and anger that males have been allowed to compete in female sports. Many are afraid that they will be called conservatives or transphobes if they speak up. They're not wrong to have this concern. Every feminist or liberal who questions trans activists is dismissed as far right, etc.
Note how "conservative" and "far right" are smears meant to discredit valid criticism. This is bigotry and circular reasoning at work. People who disagree with me are bigots because it's impossible to have a different opinion without being a bigot. People on the right sometimes agree with those who disagree with me, which shows that those who disagree are on the far right...and we know that people on the far right are bigots.

When you refer to males competing in womens’ sports you’re rejecting the existence of transgender females. There’s nothing wrong with saying transgender females have unfair advantage which is certainly the case with Lia Thomas.
When you refer to males competing in womens’ sports you’re rejecting the existence of transgender females. There’s nothing wrong with saying transgender females have unfair advantage which is certainly the case with Lia Thomas.
The Yale swimmer Iszac Henig is a transgender female. Meaning a female human being who currently claims to "identify as" a man.
Lia Thomas is a male person who at the present time claims to "identify as" a woman. In other words, Thomas is a transgender male. If Thomas weren't male, then Thomas would not be nor need to be "transgender."
How this plays out - how is this relevant? The concern, whether you agree with it or not - is the advantage that those born male have over female competitors. It is odd the way some express sour grapes.

I should clarify my earlier comment. Lia Thomas claims that Thomas actually is a woman. In the recent Sports Illustrated profile, Thomas said “I’m a woman, just like anybody else on the team."
Sport Illustrated also made it clear in its article that that its staff believes that anyone who is not wholly behind Thomas participating in women's swimming is guilty of "bigotry" and that it's impossible to be genuinely "progressive" and still believe that female sports shouldn't be opened up to any males, not even ones who make gender identity claims.
“It’s mean,” one Penn parent who identifies as a progressive but opposes Thomas’s eligibility says of the online and media bigotry directed at [Thomas]. “Lia is a human being who deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. But it’s not transphobic to say I disagree with where [Thomas is currently] swimming.”
That argument is disingenuous to Thomas. There is no such thing as half-support: Either you back [Thomas] fully as a woman or you don’t. “The very simple answer is that I’m not a man,” [Thomas] says. “I’m a woman, so I belong on the women’s team. Trans people deserve that same respect every other athlete gets.”
