1.1 seconds faster than the 1500m specialist Haile Gebrselassie.
What is the purpose of this post?
I guess user 786 is trying to communicate that Jakob's WR is not worth much. Then again one could observe that Hicham El G. did not run much faster than Haile G.
He got it exactly as he likes it and to his strengths. With his excellent high aerobic speed he could "cruise" as fast as he could and then steadily increase the last 400. Is not a slightly progressive run the optimal?
I do not know the diff btw indoor and outdoor track, but they presented 4s/mile. Seemed a little much? Jakob ran 3.28 in Tokyo and I would not think he is in shape or have improved 2 sec to outdoor WR. The Indoor record just lags behind, but if it is comparable to 2s/mile faster outdoor time, he did the same as Tokyo which is a really good sign. But even if Jakob has shown talen for years, I realize it is crazy that a Norwegian kid can run that fast time after time. We did not do that until the Ingebrigtsen brothers came along.
I think the difference is maybe 1 second at most per mile. These bouncy indoor tracks with perfect conditions/weather are probably faster than almost all outdoor meets (minus perfect conditions at a place like Monaco). The more impressive thing is just running 3:30 straight up in February, probably off of minimal speed work.
if the new spikes are worth 3-4 sec per mile (lol @rojo) - then tefera shouldve been able to at least match his old PR right?
Old people just salty and looking for excuses why they didn't run faster in their prime. I was never any good but ran all my Prs between 2006-2014 in Ventulas/Jasaris/Victories. Can I say my 4:30.03 Mile is really about a 4:26? No, of course not because obviously I didn't run that nor do the shoes make any difference.
Same with short road races, the Nike Streak XC or LT2 would still be my go to shoe if I could find it.
Now the only shoes that make a difference are the Vaporflies and shoes like that. That's mostly because a shoe had never really been engineered to actually race a marathon. Your options sucked before then. You could either go with a little beefier racing flat or lightweight trainer that would still destroy your legs or wear trainers and run 3-5 minutes slower but save your legs. Really Hoka changed the game with their Clifton 1 but they don't get any of the credit.

In watching the replay, I remain transfixed by that pole vaulter's pole that nearly nailed Jakob in his final 50 meters. Major hat tip to the official who caught it.

Yes that is crazy. I cannot see any safety features. One guy sitting in a chair...

Yeah you don't want to ever downplay a WR - especially over 1500m but the reality is this really wasn't a great WR that the big players of the late 90's and early 2000's ever really went after in earnest. Given that as this running speed there is no appreciable difference between running indoors or outdoors, 5 seconds was far too large a gap between the in and outdoor marks.
I think Jakob and even some other guys out there could easily push this record down into the 3.28.5 range if they really wanted to - how much they would sacrifice bigger picture periodization for the outdoor season is another question.

Right on. Yakob and a couple other guys could get this record down to 3:28.5 if they wanted to. But they probably wouldnt want to because theyd sacrifice too much in the way of their periodization. And so, as was the case with the generation of talent that came before them, little effort is put into lowering this mark.
