Talent follows the success. Alabama couldn't recruit and didn't win prior to the Nick Saban era. They averaged 7-5 from 1997 to the 2006.

the big ten is always propped up as a top conference by all for ratings and revenue. Lots of money and alumni in the big 10 and they need that revenue to keep coming in. The stadiums are packed every week. If the Big 10 was excluded and properly left out of post season it would be bad for financials.

The confident stupidity is really amazing.

1) The SEC has been the best conference for some time (top end strength, and probably overall depth). True.

2) So, only SEC teams should be in the playoffs. Or, the Big 10 shouldn't ever be in the playoffs. REALLY Stupid.

And just a casual glance at the rankings and bowl results this year would tell you how obvious this is.

Georgia embarrassed Michigan. Yep. And I'm an alum and it sucked. And Kentucky beat Iowa, and Arkansas beat PSU.

AND, Ole Miss lost to Baylor, and Florida lost to UCF, and Auburn lost to Houston, and Tennessee lost to Purdue.

And WHO was the SEC team that should have been in the playoffs instead of UM or OSU? 8th ranked Ole Miss? 21st ranked Arkansas? 22nd ranked Kentucky? Right.

And this doesn't even address the relative strength of the OTHER 3 conferences that the OP and others pretend don't exist......

The Big Ten was 6-4 in bowl games this year, and one of their bowl games was a mismatch of Rutgers vs #17 Wake Forest because both teams had their opponent cancel due to COVID. So they reasonably could have been 7-3 if Rutgers had their original opponent. This means that on average the big ten teams were a little lower ranked than they should have been. Yes Michigan got blown out but they played the previously #1 ranked team in the country. Ohio State beat their top 10 ranked team, and Michigan managed to beat Ohio State, that's how they made their way in there. Really it was only Michigan who crapped the bed out of every single big ten team in a bowl game. The other losses were the aforementioned Rutgers loss which was a mismatch, then #17 Iowa lost by 3 to #20 Kentucky without their starting running back, and then #21 ranked Arkansas beat unranked Penn State. The Big Ten won all of their other games.

If you want to talk about overrated conferences look at Pac-12 I guess, they lost all 5 of their bowl games. The SEC was pretty trash outside of Alabama and Georgia. Two very very good teams and then a huge dropoff.

Agree with this post. In the interest of accuracy, Rutgers was actually not scheduled to be in a bowl game initially. They accepted the bid last minute after Texas A&M dropped out. They thought their season was over and had only about a week to reconvene and prep for the game...though they were clearly outmatched by a better team regardless. So the Big 10 bowl record would have been 6-3 without that last minute fill-in.

Iowa vs. Kentucky is the only game that I'd consider an upset going against a Big 10 team. The others weren't surprising.

All this talk of bowl records is fun, but at the end of the day it's somewhat meaningless. Even if the Pac-12 had gone 5-0 instead of 0-5, would that somehow have made them the dominant conference this year? Is the Mountain West conference the strongest in the country because they went 5-1?

The Pac-12 has really fallen. Wasn't that long ago that several of those teams were highly regarded. What happened?

When did I say anything about #2? I never said one word about "only SEC teams should be in the playoffs" or that "the Big 10 shouldn't ever be in the playoffs."

I actually enjoy other conferences making it in and getting romped on by the SEC. I love it.

For a "guy who pays attention" you sure miss a lot... The entire point of this thread is that the Big 10 has no business being in the playoff...

A few years ago, about ten years after it became obvious, most of the football media admitted that your point 1) is true. But every year we hear that Notre Dame is right up there with the best in the country, or that Oklahoma is a legitimate title contender, or that some other team should've made the playoff but the committee put in too many undeserving SEC teams. Look at the results. Alabama is 9-3 in CFP games. The rest of the SEC is a combined 4-1, with Georgia's loss coming to Alabama. Clemson is 6-4 and Ohio State is 3-3. That's it for success. The rest of the Big 10 and ACC and all the Big 12, Pac 12, Notre Dame, and others are a combined 1-12 (Oregon beat FSU in the CFP's first year, so the 1 win from that group was guaranteed). When a non-SEC school other than Clemson or Ohio State does well in the CFP, SEC fans might reevaluate, but during the CFP era, Clemson and Ohio State are the only non-SEC teams that have been relevant to the national title picture. The rest of the SEC seems to be slipping, so maybe things will change.

My issue is there's an SEC championship game. Alabama already beat Georgia. The playoff is designed to find the best team and we already know it isn't Georgia.

We saw Alabama in two away games, and they didn't even have a chance to win at home, even though they played in two stadiums. It's just a shame that no one pays attention to these things. If you look at the teams that have played in the playoffs over the last few seasons, you'll see that they've had better performances against teams that haven't made the playoffs.
