58. followed by a 29. but then came through in 2:01. followed by 3:00
Mason completely threw that by dropping off Hobbs and not letting Nick through for ages, and then Hobbs should've let Nick through earlier (at the bell). Good run from Nick but disappointing from his teammates, I guess these things happen.
Nick Willis goes home devastated
Ferlic shouldve gotten out of the way at halfway. That kinda ruined it. Hobbs looked very good tho. Nick will get that sub 4 tho at somepoint
Ferlic totally botched that pacing job.
Mason and Hobbs both did great given that Ronnie had them do a hard workout only two days before. It was my tentativness that ckst me, not Mason. Befoe the race, when Mason asked me what i wanted him to do after Hobbs took the lead, I told him to slot back in behind Hobbs. That is on me. I should have had the confidence to attack it and get him out of the way, but had Covid only 2 weeks before and it killed my confidence going into the race.
Mason and Hobbs are my guys and I'm extremely grateful they sacrificed their NYE weekend for my attempt.
Nick, you are the f'n man. Thanks for the effort. Next time will be magic.
Omg so close. It sucks to fail by such small margin. I think the tall pacemaker prevented him from going with the high schooler in the last few laps he should have moved out way earlier. I blame that guy for sure.
Eckel sighting at 7:16.
Nick was spotted pounding the table afterwards and saying he was going to train his brains out.
nick willis but cant remember my login info wrote:

Great effort Nick sooo close, especially given your setback a couple of weeks ago.
You got this in 2022. I are a true inspiration for boatloads of runners, both young and old (sometimes very old!)
I hope to catch you at Ferry Field Track sometime this year when you guys from the VNTC are cranking out those killer workouts. But not tomorrow, it is going to be 14 degrees in the morning (again). Looks like a ParkRun may be a smarter choice.
Keep the faith Nick, we believe in you!

* Training will not shave cm off his thick ankles.
* Training will not shave cm off his thick knees.
* Training will not shave cm off his wide hips.
Nick Willis is genetically suited to use an ox plow.
Training will not be enough to compensate for Nick Willis' genetic inferiorities.
You’re being a good teammate and mensch, but yeah Mason knows it wasn’t his best. Of course good pacing is hard, and running sub-4 pace after a 58 out in front isn’t easy either. He would’ve been fine slotting behind had he not slowed down to 31-second tempo but alas. The good news? You definitely got sub-4 fitness! Even more impressive with the COVID bout.
Yeah those thick legs have really held him back 🙄.
3:29
3:49
One of 8 men to podium twice at OG.
20 years of elite performance.
Keep it up Nick, you are an inspiration.
No sense of drama. Nick is very much "within himself" or composed. Pulling some of that out into the camera could be interesting, rather than monotone narration. Maybe the film was an afterthought?
Kids were a nice touch
End commentary was a spoiler. Preferred a cliffhanger. I couldn't follow the splits either, the banter was all over the place.

If you raced against him,. maybe you're still fast enough to run the first 45-49 sub 4. Lagat can but he won't.
i don´t see 45-49 sub 4 happen any time soon. the great lagat stopped maintaining his mile speed almost 7 years ago and trained for long distance/marathon. i think his speed has suffered from this. the fastest time for a 45+ runner is tony whiteman's 4:10 indoors, cardiff, 2017 (not the official world record, i think). honestly, i can't imagine anyone to run 10 seconds faster than tony.
He can do it!!!
He ran a 2:12 marathon just 3 years ago when he was 44. He is a natural mid-d guy not distance runner. He can get the speed back.
But you're correct that he won't. He just doesn't care, he moved on with his life.
great run, have just seen the video. congratulation! midnight is not ideal for a top performance, the biorhythm is in sleep mode. willis is in sub-4 shape.
@bad wigins
i also thought: lagat will make it happen. but here are the masters world records, 1500m:
m35: bernard lagat, 3:32.51 (2010), also: william tanui, 3:32.45 (1999), not official?
m40: bernard lagat, 3:40.20 indoors and 3:41.87 (both 2015)
m45: tony whiteman, 3:48.72 (2017)
m50: david heath, 3:58.26 (2015)
m55: keith bateman, 4:12.35 (2011)
lagat's mile:
m35: 3:51.38
m40: 3:54.91 indoors, 3:57.91 (2015)
sub-4 mile at age 45-49 = 3:42 1500m. not possible, imho.
Nick - Would love to see the raw footage of the attempt!
i was pacing an older guy, 53, to sub 5 a few years ago. we failed 3-4 times. the last time was the charm, took him out in 76, 75 and he finished 4.59.9. so negative split could be the key?
entertaining stuff, love it.
He seems to have a very balanced life outside running to me. Why so negative? He is a good guy

This is pretty much exactly the same. Good job.
