I agree with the almost consensus that Jewitt's foot hits Amos's knee which is then forced into is own leg. I would tend to think that neither of them should get passed to the final.

Will the officials provide a justification/clarification for their decision. I was watching it live on the NBC stream and could not believe that the network did not go back and run the slow mo replay over and over. Not a peep from the commentators other than what a shame and what good sportsmanship. Weird. No discussion of the appeal process or justification for a successful appeal. It does seem very odd that Jewett would just stumble and fall with no contact from anybody. Amos was a pre race favorite, but if some scrub in the back was down, would they put them in the final? Seems like a new strategy if you want in the next round and you can’t make it on your own talent, run for contact…

Jewetts right leg appears to be deflected toward the rail and he hooks his left calf with his right foot, then goes down.

Its unclear what cause this deflection but the likely cause is that Amos contacted his right foot.

I don't know what standard the judges apply but in a situation like this where the possibilities are:

1. He tripped himself

or

2. He was contacted from behind

I think you should consider how likely 1. and 2. are and then what the evidence for 2. is. Its obviously far more likely that something caused Jewett to fall rather than he tripped over his own leg with no assistance. Of all falls in track, most result from some contact or impedance or whatever.

If a judge believes that Amos clipped him but the evidence is unclear (no good video) than..

I would lean toward giving both guys the same fate (in or out). If they made the wrong call here, then an innocent guy is out and a guilty guy is in.

I disagree. Jewett's right foot gets clipped by Amos, causing it to buckle into his (Jewett's) left.

While I think world athletics is completely incompetent, I will say that I'm happy Amos is in, and I strongly want him to win.

You can watch it in slo-motion on the cbc.ca catalog of all OBS coverage. If you don't have access to an actual clip then "how you see it" is meaningless lol.

I already saw it on video before posting here and the point is I did not see any runner impede Jewett, that is why I was asking for extra video footage beyond what I had seen.

Run into from behind. Everyone with access to a slow-motion clip is agreeing here.

The only people saying he magically "tripped over his own feet" are people who only watched the video live. In real time people seem to have missed the contact initiated by Amos FROM BEHIND.

I had posted the video at 7:34 AM CDT time on the other thread, “Monster 800m etc” simply what I saw was that Jewett tripped up on himself. Overall consensus is that this was the case. US national bias may play a part in some people seeing otherwise. This is the reality.

Aside, it would be great to have Jewett in the final but it would make it a 10 man final in the 800 m which would be unusual without mentioning possibly dangerous. How far do you push the line before others feel disadvantaged because there’s no strong indication that he would’ve finished in the first two anyway or qualified on time. In the first heat one could see that he, Jewett, was not at his best level.

Not sure how none of you can clearly see this, but if you watch the Chris Chavez video on page 2 of this thread, Jewett's right foot contacts the inside of Amos' knee. You can see the bottom of his foot turn abruptly inward (you can clearly see the bottom of the shoe since it is a different color). This causes Jewett's right leg to displace to the left and when he brings his right leg forward, his right foot clips the inside of his left calf, which is where he stumbles. I see it clear as day. Watch it again in slo mo and advance frame by frame with the image zoomed in.

Can you get something on the record from the meet officials or team USA? I assume Jewett appealed as well and was denied. Who reviews the tape and decides? What was the official version of the events? Did Amos get special consideration because he was a pre race favorite? Hard to believe he didn’t. It’s easy to add one to the final on a 9 lane track, but how do you add 2 fairly? Do you have the two appellants share a lane?

I’ve watched it about 6 times. Jewett is running normal then his stride gets interrupted with his feet not making contact. He didn’t clip the rail and trip, he also didn’t look like he was going down or losing composure prior to the fall. Unless there is a better angle, to me it looks like he was clipped. If that’s the case, it’s a joke that Amos gets in and he doesn’t because he is the most likely cause of the fall.

This all may be true, but officials don’t decide based on who they think may be competitive in the final. If the worst runner in the semi was tripped like Amos, then they would be advanced. No? We need an official clarification and not all this speculation.

This is what I see and at the very least both should advance. What I’d like to know is what the officials saw and more details about the appeal process. Who reviews the tape? Can somebody get the officials on the record? Maybe our intrepid LRC journalists on the scene….
