Middle school records don't matter. This kid that broke the record today with the 4:23 is either almost 15 or 15 years old already.
My 13 year son, who is also an 8th grader like this kid, just ran 4:38.
I can tell you which one is going to be better in a couple years.
I want to give an update on this scuffle because it is amusing how perfectly wrong this prediction was.
Josiah Tostenson went on to win the 1500 and 3000 back-to-back at state, logged a 4:03 mile, became 2nd all-time at Woodbridge with a 13:30 3-mile, won Clovis, and helped his team to a win at XC state while sick as a dog.
This dad, whom I can tell wants (well, wanted) to take all the credit for his kids’ running successes, was likely surprised that his aforementioned son, after failing to break 17 his sophomore year, up and quit.
There is some truth in his post, in that his kid did run Section 4 of the 3200 at RunningLane. (He came last.)
Don’t be a braggart online and promenade your kid around like a trophy or this will happen.
