King Ches

Ches still has a few or maybe MANY great races in the tank. He doesn't fit the Lawi/Chelanga profile - he's been at this a long time.

And anyone who thinks that a 15x NCAA champs with 3:33, 13:04 and 27:23 on their resume is someone to bet against, malign or assume to be a failure needs to gain some perspective on the sport. This same crap happened when Rupp got hot and he continuously proved the haters wrong with both times and accomplishments.

Ches has actively been seeking US citizenship. It seems like for whatever reason he’s been denied or delayed for years now. Everyone is under the impression that a bigger sponsor like Nike or Adidas would be able to pull strings more than Skechers can to acquire citizenship, which is fair to say.

There's no reason to believe his listed age. He was clearly much older than listed.

It's obvious that you had a mancrush on Ches and overestimated Ches' upside. Teare is already faster than Ches was in the mile and 5k. Teare can beat Ches' time in the 3k (though he might not need to run that fast to win).

Teare will be on an Olympic team this summer while Ches is sitting at home.

That's your flawed opinion that you think he has many great races in the tank. Let him go. He is not injured. Don't be a flaming fanboy. As of now he's a has been. It's like some star jock in high school who gets out into the real adult world and see's he's nothing special.

Also, if you're angry that people are mocking him for others calling him KING, then its you that has the problem. If you call someone the KING, and turns out they're far from it, then you best prepare for the consequences.

Ches hasn’t improved a lot since his freshman year in college. just the facts. he was always good, but now can’t rise.

There are thousands of people naturalized every year (over 823,000 in 2019 alone). Probably only a handful have Nike or Adidas sponsorship.

You have to wonder the following about Ches

Why did every major shoe company shy away from him coming out of college when he was the most dominate distance runner for 4 years?

Why did he end up with an unproven coach? Why didn't any off the big names seem to want him as part of their group?

Why did he end up with an unproven agent? Why did all the major players not seem to want him?

Why has it been taking him so long to get anywhere in his application for citizenship?

Guessing he negotiated the best deal with Skechers. I am sure most sponsors made offers.

it's 3:35.00 in the 1500. His 1500m split en route was 3:35.46 then he sprinted another 109 meters in 14.9 while celebrating at the finish. He could have easily gotten it if he sprinted for the 1500m finish. US men are weak in the 1500 right now, Centro is not fit and Blankenship is old. Engels is unreliable.

Regardless, he might have a better chance in the 5k. Chelimo might be the only one who can outkick him. He could be a lock for 2nd.

The dude has run 349.44 in the mile, 1304 in the 5k and 27:22 in old spikes. If the King was in form, healthy and in super spikes, he'd destroy Kincaid and Fisher. And that's coming from someone who think he was overaged in college. I was never a big fan because it really bothered me that someone older than other HSers was allowed to destroy the US HS records. But. Ches's peak form is better than Kincaid or Fisher have ever been in any race. ANd it's also better than Hoare's 332.

Hoare's 332 equates to 349.38 in the indoor mile. Ches's pb in non super spikes is 349.44. But I'm not really sure Cheserek is a miler so I agree he could possible lose to hoare in a tactcal 1500 but he definitely in his prime could have run 330 in super spikes.

But this Fisher tallk is absurd.

Here's a bet.

Put a healthy Ches and Fisher out on the track. Match race wearing the same spikes. No rabbits. No other competitors. When they walk up to the start line, FIsher (as the under dog in my mind) gets to pick the distance 1500, 5000 or 10,000. Cheserek would WIPE the floor with him. He'd just sit on him and then destroy him.

He's way faster than Fisher ever was at the shorter distances.

Now. If he's permanently hurt, that's a different story.

I'm not sure why this thread is pissing me off so much. I mean Lalang ran 1300 flat in college and is nothing now. Kithuka, etc. Robert CHeseret (Lagat's brother) used to wipe the floor of Ritz in college and did nothing as a pro.

I just kind of find it sad. I guess it's possible I'm off on this. I mean he did show some problems in the armor as a senior. Lost in xc and then got hurt right outdoors? Used and abused by the swoosh? I don't know. I mean he's stil run some decent times as a pro.

If his hamstring is permanentlyhurt, then everything I wrote no longer applies. I mean look at Chris Derrick.

You know that there is no way set up the head-to-head races. So the only bet we can really establish is Fisher against Ches across those distances in real races. Since this thread resulted from the race on Saturday, I count it as Fisher 1 - Ches 0. Many people here would take the bet of keeping score for the next 5 years for the 2 runners. I predict the score will be something like Fisher 10 - Ches 1 after 5 years. It doesn't matter if it is injury or just age that slowed his progression. Things change. Nuguse and Grijalva were not quite as good in high school as guys that they beat today. I think Ches is a bit older than others do and I think it is showing in is level of improvement as opposed to his peers and his protoges. I think Ches will match all of his lifetime PRs while Fisher runs 3:30/12:55/26:55.

First - not a fanboi at all: not of Ches, not of Rupp and not of UO. But, I am an educated, broad-perspective fan of the sport and I recognize and respect talent.

But you seem pretty triggered and emotional about the whole Cheserek storyline and his lack of meeting your expectations. There's two problems with your assessment that he's "nothing special and a has been": he's improved on at least one of his PR's in each of his season as a pro and he's run legitimate times over the last year:

- Ches ran 27:23 two and a half months ago. That's his PR and at the time would have been 12th all time for Americans.

- He also ran 13:09i in the last year, just off his indoor PR and his third best overall 5000m.

Ches and Rupp are both massive talents who were heavily maligned when they didn't deliver immediate consistency after years of NCAA dominance. Yet they both continued to improve through the long-term. Hmmm?

And I don't have a problem with people mocking his nickname - I'm just calling them out for needing to get a life. It seems like you're very emotionally invested in him justifying a nickname, as if you assume he needs to beat everyone at everything to be jokingly referred to as King. I don't care what his nickname is, but I chose to point out that he's had the nickname a long time and it probably didn't start from his mouth.
