My 3yr old just rolled a 16:11

Ha, ha to all that are screaming child abuse. My 2 & 3 year old kids love to run. They would think it great fun if I timed them in a mile on the track...assuming they stuck with it the whole 4-laps. They get upset if I go for a run without first giving them a chance to run at leas .5 to .75 miles. Playing "runner" is the highlight of their day.

I ran a similar time as a three year old. I still remember the conversation with my Dad that immediately followed the time trial:

Dad- "well son, that was a pretty uninspired performance, especially considering the fact that i dropped $70 on those Nike Pegasus's"

Ex-Thrower- "I'm sorry Daddy (sniff, sniff)- I just wanted to stop (sniff, sniff)"

Dad- (feeling enraged) "Son don't ever say you wanted to quit again." (at that point in a fit of rage my Dad bent down grabbed a rock and chucked it)

Ex-Thrower- "I'm really sorry Daddy" (I then emulated my father my grabbing a rock and chucking it)

Daddy- "Wow son, that's quite an arm you have"

...And the rest as they say is history.

Judging from my personal experiences, I would suggest that you immediately give up any hope that your daughter could have a running career and instead focus on teaching discus, hammer, shot and javelin techniques. Her aerobic capacity is shit. It's her only chance for a scholarship.

Anyone see the parallels? Americans with their go-go lifestyle, will never compete on the world stage.

3 year old girl in US = ONE mile in 16+

I remember Mr. Guntsch well, and the poster previous was right that the guy was a nut. I remember road races where'd he's be running with the daughters and screaming and berating at them (5 year old kids, we're talking about, here) in the middle of the race, running ahead, then, turning around and screaming at them to catch up. He treated every inch of a 3 year old's race as if it was the last 100m in the Olympics. I don't really recall either of them having much, if any, of a high school career. Perhaps they were done by then. I seem to recall that he was ill back then, with Parkinsons or something (late 70's). I doubt he's still alive.

Yep, and that little Indian boy is working 60 hours a week in the shirt factory on top of his THIRTY miles a day. America is just soft!

You motivate her with a fattening sugary treat? She'll be morbidly obese at the age of 7. My 4 year old daughter runs intevals twice a week. Two months ago she didn't want to do her Thursday session so we killed her kitten. Needless to say, she hasn't missed a session since! It's amazing what a kid can do with the right motivation!

the shame of you giving a 4 year old a kitten, you should have known it would distract her from her training, i bet it set her back at least a month

My girl, she's 4, is just getting over a stress fracture. According to the phyisician I was "pushing her" to hard, needless to say that guy got punched in the mouth. So I backed off on her mileage a little and I've got her doing a pool workout every morning (5am.) She is doing weights three times a week-but we're keeping it light and lots of reps, she's only 4. We just did an interval workout, mile , twelve, eight, four *2. She was crying and trying to get out of doing the second set so I told her that if she didn't get her sorry out of shape ass moving she was going to run home. It's only 11 miles so it's not that long! My ex-wife says that I'm crazy, she's so slow she can't keep up with her own fat ass, why do you think I left her? Anyway we've got our first race of the season next week and I was wondering about a good pump up CD would be to make my daughter listen to, I made her read Once a Runner, we're doing 400's on Saturday.

i prefer classic rock, and most kids do too, i say eye of the tiger- survivor, we are the champions and we will rock you- both queen, good luck with her race, my five year old, wouldn't run for the world so i sent her to an orphanage

I agree...this has got to be the most ridiculous message board I have read....a bloody 3 yr old...are you all for real. How aobut letting her be a 3 yr old...and play a bit...but running laps....man...sounds like a really bad case of "I was a looser runner...so I am cramming it down my kid's throat".....
