I am an ultra runner. I don't know frequent marathon or maniac scene. It's all foreign to me. I thought my crowd was kind if odd, but these folks take the cake. I personally dont care about records. Running/walking super slow marathons each week to add another feather to my cap is not my cup of tea. But hey, whatever works I guess. All cool.
My question is this: What does it take to record a marathon to be counted by the maniacs? How about Guinness? To me, it seems like many of PM races are done with little or any oversight. Sure the course is "certified" on distance but if you can run it whenever you want and still have it count, how is this regulated? Also with multiple laps and no chip timing, this seems potentially more skeptical. And if you are the race director and pay the bill of the timing company, there is a real potential for significant conflict of interest, especially if you yourself, the race director, are actually chasing a Guinness record, Overall, sounds like huge potential for cheating. This seems majorly flawed.
