Ok, so many insistence and offense that really don´t care - or the insistency or the offense - i try to satisfy your curiosity.
ALL 4 QUESTIONS IN ONE answer.
I gonna try to answer, not about Joe that i don´t but about my own marathon training experience and procedure. I don´t accept to coach one runner before he is fit in short distances (5k, 10k and HM). Relate to Joe or every runner that i did coach or that i will coach the first condition to accept to coach him, it´s not if he did 6 months or 6 years of basic training whatever, and i really don´t care what is is talent. What really matters me it´s that the runners recently did maximize their performances in the 5k, 10k HM event. Therefore i wouldn´t accept to train Joe for the marathon the moment he did propose, but i will let the door open if Joe (or every other runner) wants to try one period (from 6 months to 3 years) that able the runner to maximize his potential on short runs (road runs eventually). Without this short runs shape condition shape i didn´t accept to train no one even he wants to pay me 1 million dollars. Then i woulkd say"forget the marathon and if you accept i start to coach you right away for the short distance events, and then when this our first goal is reach, and i will see that you are ready, we will start the marathon preparation.
About my marathon preparation. It doesn´t delay more than 12 weeks and in some cases of very used runners it doesn´t delay more than a 8 week period of specific training for one marathon
About the preparation you are right about specific training. Since that 8-12 week of the marathon specific training begins - you say that i will try specific workouts since the start - and you are right.
I start train 4 runners for one marathon that will take place in mid February 2 weeks ago. They are all average runners. However i come from the track and the today´s workout was 30min easy run + on the road 30min/marathon pace + on the track 20X500m/marathon pace with 50m/walk and 50m/eassy run recovery in about 40-45seconds. One of them, he comes out from flu recovery on the past week. Then he just did 15min easy run + 20min/marathon pace + 10X800m/slower than marathon pace. If everything goes well on the next saturday, the day before Xmas they will run another outdoor workout that consists of 7X2000m/marathon pace recovery=2min/stand and walk and on tehn Xmas day they will run the first 2 hours long run (not specific yet, just easy pace). Don´t forget that they will train some 140kilos on this week and mostly is aerobic pace/regeneration pace.
The training will increase in both quantity and quality and more percent of specific workouts, being the top one 3:00hours run with the last 30min near marathon pace, and the top workout will be 5X5k/marathon pace eventually.
It´s this kind of training that i use, of course the workouts are not the same for every runner.
I hope that this will satisfy your question. I may take the risk that i will not train Joe as John Hadd did. My first condition to accept to train someone for the marathon is that the runner is in top shape in short distance events, and then, it´s faster and easier to include specific marathon workouts as soon as possible when the marathon preparation starts.
Now the question that everybody waits. If John did use aerobic first this is a stupidity ? Yes, but i know that John didn´t use the aerobic first always as a principle. John told me that in some cases, he will take the runner to train intervals since the first day of training.
