I am not sure what to make of Valby's performance. I'm not going to say that she is or isn't "clean." And for those of you who have stated that Katelyn Tuohy isn't clean, and that is primarily the user with the moniker "How are you this blind," there is no evidence to suggest that Tuohy isn't clean. Her progression seems absolutely normal.
All of this aside, I decided to look a bit more closely at the results at Texas A&M on TFRRS. I used TFRRS because each name is linked to that runner's past results. It is easy to just select a name and see all past performances.
One trend that stuck out in the women's race was that 15 of first 20 had their 6K PRs in the race. I then selected some random names and more often than not those runners also had their PRs. Often when that many run PRs it is assumed that the course is short. The course is known to be a fast course and it was not soft so condidtions were ideal for fast times. Some of the random names I selected may not have had their fastest times in this race but they were on the same course in a different event. There were also some that were on the Paul Short Invite at Lehigh. That course is also known to be very fast and some thought that this year it was also short.
I did the same thing with the men's times. The course is not excatly the same for the men, obviously, but it does include part of the 6K course and some extra loops. The results for the men were not as dramatic but were still telling. I used the top 21 finishers for the men and threw one of the runners out because he was unattached and without a TFRRS record. of the men, 12 of 20 ran their fastest 8K at this event. And also as with the women, many of the random runners I selected also ran their best time at this event but there were a few that had them on the same course but in a different event. There were also a few at Paul Short.
With the men and the women I did not include runners that have did not have another race of 6K or 8K to compare with.
With so many running PRs, I don't believe that it can be concluded that Valby isn't clean. The only aspect that seemed "off" to me is the ease in which Valby ran away from Addie Engel. Engel is a hell of a runner herself and I was somewhat surprised by Valby's margin of victory over her. Bijan Mazaheri, the man behind LACCTiC, offered up a plausible explanation for Valby's margin. I believe his comments are earlier in this thread or in the now deleted thread asking if Valby is clean. I remember reading the comments but don't remember what thread they were in and I did not look for them. Mazaheri said something along the lines that Valby started very fast and that basically the next group of runners, that Engel led, basically conceded the race to her early and just let her go. Engel did not put in the effort to go with Valby but I have no doubt that if she had chosen to she could have made more of a race out of it. They'll be much closer together at the NCAA final.
I find the bickering here to be pretty amusing. All of the hatred that is being spewed about, primarily by those backing Valby vs those backing Tuohy, is not going to matter because this is all going to be settled on the course fairly soon. I am going to give the edge to Tuohy and believe that Valby will challenge for 2nd but Roe, Cook, Chmiel, McCabe, Chelangat, and others will have something to say about it.
