ok even if he is not running he still had a great season, yernye was predicted to be plattsburgh's 4th guy and he finished 2nd. Also mediocre time WTF!!!!!! he was running mid 27 at ECC and then he goes and runs a 26:21, mediocre i think not!!!! And TCNJ is far overrated. The top 5 teams at UofR placed all 5 of their top guys under 27 AT LEAST. And three of those teams were Atlantic Region.

Penn relays is one of the big reasons the SUNY schools decided to jump ship. when you put the two options head to head, it's really no contest.

the state meet in XC was pretty much always a joke - Cortland never ran their A team, and honestly, why would they? Cortland and Geneseo both usually feel (right or wrong) that they won't need an at-large bid to nationals, so they don't really need to run to impress, other than SUNYACS and regionals.

plus, if you were at the NYSCTC meet at Rochester last year, you might have noticed how ridiculously overdone it was. they treated it basically like a national meet, with restricted access everywhere, different coach credentials for different event areas, walking people out to events, and other things. the NYSCTC people were way too uptight about things, unnecessarily so. so, the SUNY schools decided they didn't want to put up with the shit anymore, plus they would get the chance to send people to Penn, against better competition. easy decision.

and why should the SUNY schools give a shit about the other NYSCTC schools? it's up to them to look after themselves, which is the reason why the SUNY schools did what they did in the first place. the nature of DIII track/XC in the Atlantic region is changing dramatically, and teams can't let things like meaningless conference loyalties get in the way of their ability to respond.

Except, of course, for the totally meaningful loyalties that SUNY schools seem to have to their conference? I guess they're allowed an exception.

If they want more competition, why not just drop the SUNY meet, and then they can all run at the NYSCTC meet with additional teams? Non-SUNY NYSCTC schools can't run in the SUNY meet. But SUNY schools could elect to run in the NYSCTC meet. It's a win-win: it's the weekend they want, they get to race against the schools they want, and they have the competition they're looking for. If they're so concerned with beating a rival state school, then they can just take out the NYS schools and look at results on a SUNY school only basis.

Ladies:

Geneseo- wins easily with grace and glory

Cortland- tries to beat geneseo but falls short (they are no Plattsburgh and def not as strong of a team as they had last yr with wisowatie running, bubsy and so on)

Brockport- barley beat platts but with a better pack and performance have to pick them)

Plattsburgh- try to have a good showing but with such a young team who knows if you can count on them)

Men:

Cortland- any disagreement their is sure to be delusional, the bigger discussion here is which one from their team will win it- Dubois, Wagner, Shamus and so on

Geneseo- have a strong pack

Plattsburgh- they have done well this year with such a new team and a strong front runner, hopefully Yerne is back and strong

The rest is up for grabs I would say, Fredonia's leader-Williams?? Will be up in the top 5 showing as an individual

I agree with you that CNJ is overrated. However, if you had ever been to Paul Short you would know that it is neither flat, nor is it on a golf course.

Well first of all, I believe that in SUNY schools, many times the only thing (below national level) that the AD's care about are SUNYAC titles - no one gives a damn about CTC in SUNY, and no one ever has, it's a meaningless conference in the SUNY system. Secondly, as to 'where will they go' for times? Look at a school like Cortland - the majority of their marks came at 1. Princeton 2. NYCQ or 3. ECAC - all of which are superior meets in terms of efficiency and competition. Add in the Penn factor, and now you've got 4 meets where they can get the times.

As for lower end SUNY schools, well they can easily get into 'fast' races in the SUNYAC meet, especially with the Cortland/Gen (and now Heymann/Manktelow) people running hard.

Bottom line : CTC has always been a weak and pointless conference, and with the exception of Kosgei (and Stenuf I guess, although he's gone now), there is no good competition on the mens side - so why would SUNY schools want to be part of a slower meet in terms of competition, run by incompetent bureaucratic officials who see themselves as far more important than they actually are?

The problem that I've seen over the years in the region as a whole, is that too many people are concerned in general with their local conferences, they see them as a big deal, when in reality, they don't mean crap. However, in recent years, there has been a clear shift in some cases - the top SUNYAC schools run SUNYAC's simply because they have to - it's not an important meet to them, whereas to NYSCTC schools, many of them place huge importance on their meet and see it as a very big deal.

Look at a school like Cortland (sorry for so many examples from them, but hey, they're doing things the right way), they basically run a D1 schedule:

XC - 1 Tune up meet (Oswego/Oneonta/SLU) for the top guys, followed by Paul Short, Penn State, Conference, Regional, Nationals - with a nice 2 week buffer between conference and regional.

Track - 1 Tune up meet (Ithaca), followed by Princeton, Bucknell, home meet/Penn, conference, NYCQ, ECAC (for last ditch qualifying hopes), Nationals.

In both cases, they cut out the fluff of meets like CTC and other local crap that won't get them times - and you can see other teams starting to follow suit, Oneonta headed to NYCQ last spring, Geneseo is starting to broaden their schedule - bottom line, the local meets don't cut it, and only the narrow minded or those who actually think a CTC or SUNYAC win means something are still arguing that people should go to those meets.

The record books will show that the most successful Atlantic Region schools have been those outside the SUNY system. Recenly some of the SUNY programs have done a phenomenal job in recruiting, training and racing, and I certainly understand their need to strike while the iron is hot, but they may regret having left the CTC meet once they run into more unsuccessful seasons.

Schools like SLU and UR have figured out how to race hard at multiple championship races and still do well at NCAAs. Ithaca, RIT, and the rest of the Empire 8 just pull their conference results out of the CTC results and that has gone fairly well too.

I think the decision had more to do with management, control of the meet, and money. The coaches can make their own calls on whether to rest or sit out some of the A squads but to pull out of the meet completely now leaves two mediocre meets rather than one great meet.

You're right. The record books clearly show that Cortland has NOT won the most women's DIII XC national championships in history. Wait, what? They have? I guess that means Big Picture has poor eyesight or the big picture was at least out of focus.

Clearly with good coaching, which the top SUNY schools seem to have, those schools have all the ingredients necessary to remain perennial national contenders.

You call yourself Big Picture, yet the picture you look at is still LOCAL level competition - who gives a damn about conferences? Great, SLU and UR have made it to NCAA's - when have they performed well there? And showing up for the meet doesn't count as placing well. Show me national titles from those teams, heck, show me podium finishes (I believe Rochester has 1 win, '91?)...

Cortland Men: C'mon, who are we kidding? 1 National Title (ok, ok, 1 national title if you ask me 4 weeks from now)

On the guys side, I count 20 top-10 finishes for men's teams from both CTC and SUNY - hardly a dramatic swing either way. 56 CTC all-americans in XC, 45 from SUNY.

Cortland Women: 7 National Titles

Geneseo Women: 1 National Title

I count 13 top-5 finishes for SUNY women's teams, not including Cortland's 7 national titles - 5 top-5 finishes for CTC women, no national titles. 4 National champions in XC on the SUNY women's side, none on the CTC. 79 SUNY all-americans in XC, 24 from CTC.
