I read all your posts previously but still think you don't understand what periodization is and why it is the most important element of a progressive multi-annual training plan. "Inbuilt periodization" is just a made up term....running 300's/400's or 600's at 5k economy pace is the same stimulus and does not represent an "inbuilt periodization" or anything periodization related. Your "system" has 2 sessions per week (1 is 6-10 miles of threshold (a copy of canova training) and the other is 3-5 miles at VO2 (PACE) or you could say a 5k economy session (One part of Jack Daniels training). You also have a standard semi-long run sometimes with 20-30 mins of quicker running. This is not rocket science. You call your system DANCAN after Jack Daniels and Renato Canova and still say it's entirely your invention. It's not an invention, it's not art, it's just copy and paste until something stalls and then you won't have answers....
There are a lot of things i dislike about JS (particularly in threads not about him), but so far I have enjoyed this thread for the most. I am particularly curious how "below average" will perform. Although the impression I get, a runner of his caliber would do good with pretty much any training plan.
It is also my understanding that in order for adaptations and improvements to happen, it takes quite a while (sometimes years), so the plateau "below average" mentioned was maybe not that surprising. I have noticed in various cases runners tend to think they're plateauing before hitting a big break through.
He is very motivated currently and I can see why. It is always nice to see improvements over short term. I simply don't know how this will play out in 6 months or a year. I would be in agreement what other posters have mentioned before, if it were possible to get the same results with less work, everyone would be doing it.
I tend to follow the data, and the data shows that in order to get major long term improvements, you have to put in the time and work, there are no short cuts.
So, a question for people that are skeptical about JS, if you would train a runner of "below average's" pedigree, how would you have his training set up? By how much would you have increased mileage and intensity for him to hit 2:19:00 at CIM?
Cheers,
