if you're dropping dead across the line it's not going to be one of your best performances, that's just how physiology works
I've actually come to agree with this perspective over the past few years. Some of my best races I found myself running a fast cooldown feeling amazing, or picking off a Strava segment on the run home from the race. (These are also the times you can get injured or sick from pushing too much)
I was watching the Olympic men's 1500m semi final heats again recently and half of those guys who ran 3:32 or so just crossed the line and walked to the tunnel with their mouths closed, breathing calmly. They looked like they just did a casual set of 6x200 or something. They were completely unphased. When you're fit, you're fit, even if not on drugs.
Bodybuilding isn’t known as a big money sport but the fans come to see the pros. In Marathons, the fans come to see their friends, family and the spectacle of thousands of runners.
I believe part of it must be the aspect of the choice to train solo, whether it's cause or effect. Rare is the individual who can consistently put out best efforts without being consistently pushed/pulled by peers in training. More than sharing a coach, this is an aspect shared between Bates and Fauble that contributes to performance outcomes. Bates lives in the same area as Obiri and Kiplagat, who are known to train together. Bates lives in the same area as Lindsay Flanagan, even sharing a sponsor. Tagging along with them a couple times per week for tougher efforts could be far more valuable than even choice of coach.
The old school guys, Rodgers and Shorter, ran mostly alone and put up 2:10s on 💩 shoes.
Stone age shoes, yes. The rest is flatly incorrect.
Great result for him! 2:11 on a debut is good for an American. Hopefully he makes small, but steady progress over next few years to move into that 2:07-2:09 range
Good take.
Any runners here who felt the weather was hotter in the 2nd half? Several runners I know faded a little bit at 22-23...
